I think you misunderstood. I didn’t say FREE education…I said “free tuition” so that your contribution ($60k total) could go towards room, board, fees, books, etc.
FREE tuition just means THE TUITION part is free…you’d still have $15k-20k per year to cover.
AND…you’ve already stated that the 2 younger won’t likely have the stats to get much or ANY merit, so it would appear that you’re going to need that $200k split unevenly…like maybe $75k each for younger, and $50k for older one…or something like that.
I think a lot of high schools (and people who don’t really understand) perpetuate this falsehood in communities by touting the “scholarships” received by students, even when that “scholarship” is a need-based award. I have heard students praised for the LARGE scholarship they got from College X, when College X only gives need-based aid.
Hello @TnTWalter I sympathize. Our family did not land in this situation, but ONLY because one of us works at a university and started to realize the meteoric rise in tuition as our child was moving toward high school. That allowed us to play catchup with the savings. Even then we could only offer 20-25K per year in college costs to child number one, which, combined with some generous scholarships (such as 15, 20, 30K per year) was STILL not enough to afford several of the colleges. Child ended up at a state u, this lowers costs a lot, but not as much as hoped. Yeah we live in one of THOSE states.
As far as PT, it’s great to get direct entry, but there are other paths to PT…if one of our kid’s direct entry choices is unaffordable.
Finally, if it has not been mentioned, you could propose that kid asks colleges for a deferral of admission. If they will hold admission and hold scholarship for her for one year, she (and you) could save up more. I know people that have done it…kind of a gap year, but with the assurance of a college you already know accepted you waiting at the other end.
^^
I doubt that last suggestion would work since it sounds like the 4 year gap is more than the family could save in one year.
@TnTWalter I suggest that you go back and re-read all the posts because it appears that you haven’t read them carefully. At one point your post suggested that you didn’t see the suggestions as to what needs to be done now (and there are SEVERAL suggestions as to where your DD could apply now to get much better merit…and at another point, it appears that you think I said you are looking for or need totally free college. What you need is FREE TUITION.
I know a lot of boys especially who just aren’t ready for academics until they are about 23-25 years old (my son, my husband who is now top of his academic field didn’t start college until he was 26; several of his male grad students . . . )
Getting hard skills down, hands on, can ease the way.
someone asked about MIami University. Is it still open. I don’t understand that question.
Thanks to all for the kind words. It was a rude awakening. Obviously I should have been on here more in OCTOBER. Lol. This will help with my other 2…we wasted lots of time visiting colleges we cannot dream of affording [Belmont for example] even with a ‘great’ merit scholarship…
I was on here asking about PT schools way back but didn’t think about ‘how do i pay for it…’ should have asked that…
Purdue is still on table and we are leaning that way…BUT U of Evansville is also a good contender…because of Scholarship going through the 6th year…save a year of college and don’t have to re-apply etc. to PT program…
St Louis U is similar priced I think after merit scholarship but she likes U of E a little more…
People kept telling us wait til February more scholarships will roll in…ummmm…? LOL.
again, appreciate it. I will look at the schools still listed. I just am not sure she wants to go to any of them.
As hard as she has worked for all these years, it’s hard for me not to want her to go where she wants to go…but money is finite.
We can afford it probably. Our youngest is only in 8th grade so we don’t have an idea what his high school journey will be like. He says he wants to join military at this stage but I don’t want to count on that. We will probably be able to cash flow him…I can focus the $200 k on the 2 girls and cash flow him.
thanks again. i went back and see some posts i missed first time around. never saw UaB in all my searches [and i searched and searched] for direct entry PT schools. So she can quickly apply and possibly get a full tuition?
@TnTWalter please contact UAB…in the past they have not held to that Dec deadline…at all.
scholarships@uab.edu Send them an email, include stats and home state and ask if it’s too late to apply and be considered for that $15k per year tuition award which covers nearly all OOS tuition.
loans. we aren’t interested in loans. they all offered us loans.
UAB are you talking about which campus so I know? I didn’t realize they have several. I think the Birmingham is the one you are referring to that also has DPT.
Nobody is interested in loans until they realize how much it costs. Do you honestly think that anyone would take a loan if they could afford to pay out of pocket? Of course not.
@TnTWalter You mention that your daughter is a track athlete…so is my daughter. There is money if she can meet qualifying standards for her event and if a school is looking to fill out their roster in her events. It is a lot of work, but can definitely be fruitful. Email and call coaches directly. Ask if they are still recruiting. Good luck!!
Please be careful of wanting to cash flow your youngest. One never knows about what the future holds as to unemployment or health issues that could effect earning potential. Don’t rob Peter to pay Paul.
“May” is the important word here. The schools on the OP’s list do not guarantee to meet full need. When the second kiddo enrolled on college…there might not be a nickel of additional need based aid.
Does this mean you are instate for Indiana? The OOS public universities could very well be unaffordable if you are looking for full tuition awards. The private schools on this list most likely will not give her full tuition.
The DPT will be an additional number of years. There is seldom funding for DPT students. So, don’t count on that…at all.
Are any of the current schools affordable with the aid she has currently received? Any of them?
