sports internships? she doesn’t need those…? she’s hoping to be a physical therapist…i think schools with teams have opportunities for PT when she’s at graduate level…
she has already been accepted to Purdue which is about $19 k per year. Not sure if it’s worth looking at schools that will be close in price when she really likes purdue…
She is NOT likely to get a job as a sports intern while she is pursuing a DPT program. She WILL have pravticum supervised placements as part of her program.
Please…look up the requirements for a DPT. It’s a doctoral level program…very course intensive.
sports intern…thats why I had a ? i had no idea what that person was talking about…why that matters to my daughter.
she’s going to be in honors college and possibly in a fast track 6 year PT program so she needs to focus on studies…
money…i just want to know where the money is for the scholarships it seemed would be rolling in…whether I can afford to pay full price or not is not the point of the question…where is the scholarship money? are there more opportunities? those were my questions…
we are leaning towards Purdue and U of Evansville… and they are both in the realm of possibilities… if Purdue, we need to re-apply for the DPT programs which starts all over…if Evansville, she’s in for 6 years and done…
I have kept track of costs paid for DD1 and DD2 with our in-state UG programs. Each has been over $100,000 - paid by school scholarships, our purchased state tuition plan, and our stock fund set up for their education. Oldest graduated BSN with honors and no debt, but she spent all her stock account money too - but the silver lining is she is making a great salary now, able to live rather thrifty, has a wonderful room-mate which helps keep rent cost reasonable at a very nice place. DD2’s school scholarships were stronger, had higher pay two of the three past summers (as engineering intern), and will probably graduate with a healthy chunk of money remaining in her stock account.
$200K stretched to 3 students is a possibility, but not with the list for the oldest - and not paying any money for DPT or any other graduate school.
Very resourceful students at the right campus can get great experiences to help with admission to DPT program.
I suggest applying to schools where still can get great merit money, go on those college visits, and determine what works for the family.
Is the Evansville DPT program an accredited program? What will be your cost per year?
Important question…when in the six years will your daughter be viewed as a graduate student? I’m asking, because at that point, undergrad aid might go,away.
Where are the scholarships? She got some scholarships. She just didn’t get as much as you hoped she would get.
thumper U Evansville scholarship goes all the way through. It’s the only one I know of.
sorry not sure about the question where are the scholarships? yes she got ‘great’ merit scholarships but not what we were led to believe [obviously based on my poor research and relying on friends’ information]…
I sent an email to UAB scholarships asking if it’s too late for merit scholarships and here is their response…

Thank you for contacting us. It is not too late to apply for scholarships. Incoming freshmen are automatically considered for academic (ACT & GPA-based) scholarships if they are admitted to UAB by December 1 of their senior year in high school (May 1 for out-of-state students). The final test scores that will be considered for scholarship purposes are the December 2016 ACT and SAT test scores. (We do not consider the writing portion of either exam.)

AS an undergrad, she will need hands-on patient care experience…which often means interning for free for the school’s sports teams…again this is as an undergrad…wrapping and icing ankles, etc, and observing the PTs.
While in the actual DPT program, she’ll have no time to earn any money.
did you see my post about that it’s NOT too late for UAB? I contacted the school myself and asked.
You have to apply to schools that will give merit money to your particular kid. You really should have been asking these questions late sophomore year, early junior year not second semester of senior year.
My DD16 is going to OU and double majoring in Comp Sci and Meteorology, they have one of the best meteorology programs in the county and the school is a perfect fit for her. She was awarded a National Merit Scholarship valued at $128K and covers a 5th year. She knew NM was the only was she would be able to afford OU so she really prepped for the PSAT test. She was also awarded about $10K in outside stackable scholarships (non need based). She will have the opportunity to apply for additional scholarships as she gets further along with her program.
DS18 wants to major in Comp Sci and his current plan to attend UT Dallas, if he makes National Merit his out of pocket expenses will be less than $600 a year including books and room and board, their National Merit scholarship is $100K for in state students). He also plans to apply for their competitive McDermott scholarship which would be over and above a full ride but he’s not counting on that! His plan B is to earn their highest AES scholarship (full tuition plus $3K a semester stipend) which would leave us paying OOP about $5500 a year. If he ends up with this option he will likely graduate in three years (he has this option because of AP and DE credits) He plans to apply to outside scholarships as well but realistically he doesn’t have some of the hooks his sister had and will likely get a few thousand one time scholarships at most. Plan C is to live at home and commute to UT Austin and take out loans if needed. He’ll be an auto admit to UT Austin so it is a safety for him.
DS20 will likely have the same or similar plan as DS18 his grades and rank will be similar but it’s too soon to tell was his SAT will be.
There is a lot of money out there but you need to make sure you apply to schools that offer great merit aid and fits your child’s needs.

the best scholarships are from the schools that offer BIG ones for high stats. But, you have to identify which ones those are. It’s ok to have a list that has some schools with unknown merit amounts, but if you want merit, you also need to apply to a few schools where the award amounts are KNOWN based on stats. That way, you have some safeties in your pocket.
Both of my kids went to Alabama for undergrad. One got the huge NMF award (free tuition, free housing, plus other goodies), and the other got free tuition plus 2500 per year. These amounts weren’t a mystery. They were assured awards for their stats…stated on the website.
Will your DD apply to UAB now that you know it’s not too late? And also…have her apply to the direct admit program…deadline for that is May 1st.
My D looked at U Evansville and really liked it. I don’t remember how the money went but it was a possibility for her. She wasn’t looking at DPT though. It seems unless I’m not getting it, that it would be a direct entry program. That seems to be a big plus, I know that for pharmacy or physician assistant programs, a direct entry program is huge. And also wouldn’t it be a year less than Purdue?
We visited Purdue and I wasn’t a fan, it seemed very cutthroat and competitive. It was for our S who was better in a less competitive environment. Those are my $.02 for what it’s worth.
Anyways I wanted to come here and say that I heard all those “stories” that you are talking about before I found CC. That there was “tons” of money out there and “everyone” seemed to find full rides and money was plentiful. It was like lies your mother tells you. The same lies that every kid of every person who worked with my H was brilliant and first in their class with a full ride. I became convinced that everyone lies, just like they lie about ACT scores also.
It’s not true, there isn’t “tons” of money out there. There is some money but not enough and definitely not enough for full rides, you don’t have to pay for anything. I’m not sure why these stories go around but they were plentiful at my kids HS. Just like my nephew was highly gifted (same scores and grades as my “average” kids) are the stories of full rides.
Boy that sounded so jaded. There are a few full rides out there, the kind posters have told you about them. Even investigated scholarship deadlines. I love the posters because they do this all the time. But lots of money at Purdue and Evansville, some not tons.
If she is set on PT I would seriously consider Evansville. At $146,000 with their scholarship, being able to finish in 6 years and not 7, and the pre admit, I don’t think you’ll be able to get her entire education for much cheaper unless she wanted to go into the military and was lucky enough to be accepted into Baylor University’s Army DPT program. It’s a bit like getting accepted to Harvard jthough. Purdue is an excellent university but Evansville offers the most direct and likely cheapest path to her career. You can ask others more in the know but I think once she moves into the DPT portion of her education your income will no longer be considered on her FAFSA. She should be able to take on more loans to fund that portion of her education. That may free up more of your funds for your other children.
Even assuming you could keep her undergraduate costs around $50k (it would be close even assuming you found her a school that would offer her a full tuition scholarship at this point) DPT school will likely run at least 80k (assuming she would accepted in state) or much higher at a private school.
The only IF is what happens if she changes her mind. That’s where Purdue has the big advantage. Being a much larger state flagship it would provide more opportunities for a student who might want to change her major or career track. I have a D at Purdue and a second D who wants to be a PT. I really empathize with you. Good luck.
This just is NOT true.
With that said, most outside scholarships have long since closed (the big ones at least).
Your other 2 may not be thinking about grad school now but that doesn’t mean they won’t think about it in the future. If I understand correctly, one of your kids is a freshman. I never would’ve guessed even halfway through undergrad that I would go on to get an MPH.
It actually is though. I can name one major outside scholarship that is purely merit. Coke. That’s it.
Maybe you can scrounge up a couple of purely merit, local ones, but that’s likely it. All the big ones have a need component, and MOST of those factor it in very heavily.
It’s getting to the point the parents education on financial aid is almost worth what the college degree is.
Example: if you can save 40K/year in cost * 1.06^30 (6% over 30 years) = 160,000*5.75 = 528,401 dollars 30 years after graduation.
What I’ve found is it’s beneficial to target schools with large endowments that only give need-based aid and meet 100% of need. The challenge here is for the student to get accepted to these top tier schools. We went this route by pure accident, but the outcome was that the most expensive college on paper had the lowest out of pocket cost with the exception of 3rd tier state school living at home. The best you can hope for is for them to meet your actual need. Then sit back and be proud of your child’s accomplishments.
Has Purdue given out all of their Presidential Scholarships yet? Two years ago that did not happen until late February. Not every high student gets one, but if they still have not been distributed there is still a chance for that one.
Purdue… she got the presidential scholarship it’s $4k per year…making it about $19k per year…
Her scholarship to Indiana Wesleyan makes it about $20k per year…
so those are the least expensive 4 year schools. She really liked IWU and can run track there if she wants.
So that’s the target to meet or beat if she wants to go elsewhere that’s 4 year.
Taylor is $27k after scholarship but they said they give out more scholarships in spring which is super annoying…lol.
Evansville is about $25k after scholarship and it scholarship goes through the doctoral program…and she saves a year and having to apply, etc. IF she sticks with PT. 6 years will cost $156k assuming no increases and no extra scholarships/grants…
MOM2 thanks so much for contacting Uab for me! too kind! I will have her apply today.
Courtney.
local scholarships…she’s applied for several $1-$2k scholarships but they aren’t renewable. She should get a couple. She’s also competing for one that her school counselor told her about yesterday [only 1 kid per school is nominated]. Don’t know amount.
She was up for but did not get the Lily Endowment which is full tuition to any school in Indiana. That would have been sweet.
