Are there any scholarships out there that I could apply for? I am currently a senior. My family receive food stamps. I had a 1.8 GPA going into this school year, turned it around and got all A’s, got a 24 on my ACT. Is there any scholarships that aren’t merit based that I could apply for? I am a Indiana resident.
There are plenty of scholarships across a wide array of criteria for students, some involve an association with the funding organization, some are intended academic major-base, career-goal based…the list is endless.
As you are seeking the non-merit scholarship, you will need to look beyond your post-secondary educational institution, and you should start with simple Google searches for scholarships. If your school participates in Naviance, your counselors should have lists of hundreds of scholarships that are known to them available to you just by looking at that section of Naviance.
As you are on food public assistance, you likely qualify for substantial need-based financial aid, and you can get an idea of what any school’s offerings to your family might be by filling out the Net Price Calculator at each college’s website. It should not take you more than about 20 minutes to fill this out once you have gathered all the pertinent forms which comprise your family’s earnings and expenses.
@Waiting2exhale My school has Naviance, but it only shows about 3 or 4 scholarships that I can apply for, all of which are based on attending a certain university (ones I won’t get into)
If you are very low income, you woild, qualify for,the Pell Grant, and the Dorct Loan…total about $11,000 and would find tuition at a community college…if you could, commute from home. That might be a good start for you. Prove that you can actually do well in college, level courses.
@arby423: These are scholarships that the high school has pre-determined should be in your specialized scholarship box.
Go to the left sidebar and select ‘scholarships,’ and then either select ‘all,’ or click the box for each grade, or at least for grades 11 and 12, so that you can see the entirety of the scholarships that your school has plugged into its scholarship toolbox.
I like what this couple has done in gathering sites to look at for scholarships:
