As of right now, I am not sure which college I will be attending. Tuition could range anywhere from $20,000-$70,000 or even more. I was wondering, what are some places that I can apply to for scholarships? I am not sure whether my father will want to pay for my college education although he can afford it, so I’d like to be prepared and apply to as many scholarships as I can. I have looked into the Jack Cooke Scholarship, but I don’t know if I qualify. I know that you can’t have more than a certain amount of income, and my father already earns more than that, so I have to rule that scholarship out. Please let me know if you know of any scholarships I can apply to.
Not enough information!
Are you a high school senior? Are you a community college student?
Have you discussed college finances with your parents? If not…you need to do,that ASAP.
Are your parents married?
Are you low income?
What are your SAT or ACT scores and your GPA?
Realize…the best scholarships come from the colleges that admit you…unless you happen to get selected for something like Questbridge.
Also…no one…repeat NO ONE must attend a $70,000 a year college. If that is not within your family budget, and you don’t get sufficient aid from the colleges to attend…they need to be dropped from consideration.
High School Junior.
Like I said, I don’t think that my parents will pay for the tuition, so I am pretty much on my own.
My parents are married, and they both earn a significant amount, both individually and put together.
GPA is 4.0, 4.40 wtd. SAT is 1480.
No school has a tuition of $70,000 (or more).
Your other thread says that you haven’t yet taken the SAT. So which is it?
So…what WILL your parents pay per year?
Find out.
You wrote this yesterday:
If you score that high you may qualify for some merit aid, but if your parents won’t contribute anything it still might not be enough to afford residential college. The best scholarships come from the colleges, so you need to find some affordable ones. Ask your parents how much they’ll pay. If they don’t know, run the Net Price Calculators of the schools you’re interested in to get an estimate of your net cost, and ask your parents if they’ll pay it.
What are they saying about college? Do they expect you to go?
Also, if your parents earn a lot of money, that would make you ineligible for Questbridge…and many other high amount outside scholarships…which consider financial need as a component.
You need to talk to your parents. You need to ask them what they hope you will be doing when you graduate from high school? And if they say “college”, you need to have a money talk regarding how much they WILL contribute.
What is your actual ACT/SAT score??? If you haven’t yet taking. It, take it THIS SPRING so you know what you need to work on and then retake in fall.
Forget about private scholarships to seriously help fund 4 years of college. You need to apply to the schools that will give you huge merit for stats.
And get a firm answer from your parents.
“Tuition could range anywhere from $20,000-$70,000”
I think that you mean that the total cost of attendance could range this widely. I have never seen tuition as high as $70k per year. I have seen cases where the total cost of attendance was less than $20k per year and I have (sadly) seen cases where the total cost of attendance was over $70k.
“GPA is 4.0, 4.40 wtd. SAT is 1480.”
With these stats I can think of schools that you could attend where the total price of attendance would be $20,000 per year or slightly less. I strongly suspect that other people on CC could suggest different schools, which might be closer to where you are and might or might not be more attractive to you. I am pretty sure that this would be true even if you do not qualify for need based aid.
However, if your parents aren’t going to help at all, then I don’t see how you could possibly come up with $80,000 to pay for four years of university.
If your parents could afford to pay for $70,000 per year, and if this makes need based aid impossible, and if they are only willing to pay $20,000 per year, then folks here should be able to suggest good schools where you could go. If your parents are not willing to pay anything at all, then to me it looks like you may have to get a job and possibly think about taking community college classes.

I agree with @thumper1. You need to see if you can get your parents to pay anything.
I apologize, I typed SAT when I should have rather said PSAT. I have NOT taken the SATs yet. And yes, total cost of attendance is $20-70K, not tuition itself. As of this moment, state school and community college seem realistic options purely based on cost of attendance, if they aren’t going to pay anything. Thanks for all the replies! I will have a chat with my parents soon.
Even $20,000 you cannot afford alone. You can only borrow $5,500 the first year. If income is too high for federal or state grants then you will need merit to bridge the gap.
