Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2019-2020

OMGOSH WTFRICK Scholastic just emailed me saying I got an American Voices nomination!!! This is so weird! They told me about my gold key almost a week previously. Does anyone know what the American Voices nomination does?

I’m so nervous for the 31st when results for my region come out … would anyone mind reading a poem or two that I submitted? I just want to know if I have a shot at being chosen so I don’t go getting my hopes up too early.
I don’t have 15 posts yet so please PM me if you’re interested it would be great if someone could :slight_smile:

@blue1nk !! Congrats! American Voices nominations are sent for national adjudication- one piece receives an American Voices Medal. I believe the medalists (The one winner chosen at the nat’l level for each region) are invited to Carnegie Hall in June. It’s basically a best in show award!

Thanks @musicer16 dude i’m like super excited now

Anyone who has gotten a national medal before, in your experience, is it harder to get a gold key or to make the jump from gold key to medal? Also what percentage of gold keys make it to national awards? Thanks so much! I just won two gold keys so im really excited!!!:slight_smile:

@scertuik Less than 1% of all submissions get a national medal, and about 10ish percent get a Gold Key from each region. Both of them are pretty hard to get, but I would say the jump from Gold Key to National Medal is hardest because you’re going up against the best works around the country, while for Gold Key you’re up against everyone just in your region. One year I got a gold key and an American Voices nomination but didn’t make it to medal, but the next year I got a gold key and got a silver medal.

Hey everyone just a quick question, has anyone got any notifications from the Georgia region? Is it normal for awards to drop early or is this a new thing?
p.s congrats to everyone who got an award!! :slight_smile:

Hi everyone! Congrats to everyone who’s been notified of an award so far! You’re all so talented :heart:

I wanted to shoutout @Lunarlitgend especially. I’ve been a lurker on many of the past writing competition threads, and @Lunarlitgend is always spreading positivity and good vibes. You work so hard and you deserve your awards so much!

@NicoPlayWright don’t worry if you haven’t gotten a notification yet! some regions notify early, but not all. I’m in the Southwest Writing-At-Large region, and I haven’t received any early notifications. Either way, the official list will drop in less than two days, so you don’t have to wait much longer :smile:

I submitted six works to Scholastic this year, and I don’t know what to expect. I was a National YoungArts Finalist this year for writing, but in the past three years I’ve submitted to Scholastic, I haven’t been able to make it past a regional silver key. I’m really hoping for a gold key this year, but I’m happy with my pieces regardless of what happens.

I’m so excited for the 31st! Good luck to everybody else still waiting for awards. I’m sure you all did amazing :smiley:

@doodlebean8 @musicer16

Thank you guys so much! OMG you literally made my entire week hearing your support :smiley: Congratulations to you guys too! You all worked just as hard and deserve your awards too!

@bluets
OMG dude thank you so much! Your comment also made my week! I’m so glad you think that. All I mean to do is be supportive of everyone especially with CC being so uptight and cut throat most of the time. It makes me so happy to see that my positivity is touching other people! :slight_smile:
And congratulation on YoungArts! That is such a HUGE deal! You should feel so proud of yourself! I really hope you qualify for that US Presidential Scholar of the arts :smiley: and I’m praying for you January 31st! You deserve that Gold key and even if you don’t get it you’re obviously still an amazing writer and not winning a gold key will never take that away from you :slight_smile:

@moonlitpoems thank you! That was really helpful. I’m definitely very scared and doubtful now abt nationals but I’m just grateful I even won any regional awards lmao

Also has anyone else noticed scholastic highly favors race-based pieces? I feel like judging this way is not necessarily representative of the best writing but rather just the topics they want?

Good luck tomorrow everyone!! I believe in you :smiley:

@scertuik don’t be scared!!! i’m sure you’ll win something at nationals, i believe in you!!

@Lunarlitgend Thank you! I’m class of '22, so I won’t know about my US Presidential Scholar status until my senior year, but here’s to hoping!

Good luck to everybody tomorrow :heart:

@bluets wow, regardless of your scholastic award this year, huge congrats for the youngarts win! i made it to the last round of judging for writing in youngarts and i got a regional silver key for scholastic this year (for the same story), so it’s weird that you got a higher award for one but not the other?

@inflorescent Thank you! I actually didn’t submit my YoungArts pieces to Scholastic last year because they hadn’t been written yet. I won the silver keys for other works. I did, however, submit my YoungArts pieces this year, so I’m kind of curious to see how the Scholastic judges take to it. Either way, they’re both stories I’m really proud of, so even if they don’t get recognized, I don’t think I’ll be too down. Good luck to you tomorrow!

I got 2 golds, 2 silvers, and 5 honorable mentions! :slight_smile:

@moonlitpoems That’s great!!! Congrats!

received a gold key for my portfolio and an american voices nomination for a poem :slight_smile:

congrats to all the winners so far and good luck to those who have yet to be notified

So have all of the southwest region notifications gone out?

Also, did winners from the Southwest regions receive an email notification?
