School board member- Changed school policy

As you can probably see, my major question is whether these leaderhsip achievements would help. It first started when I organized a volleyball and backetball tournament to raise over $10,000 for the victims of the tsunami in 2005. Over the past seven months (senior year), I developed an analysis on a random sample survey and made several presentations to the superintendent, principals, and school board, and basically convinced the school to use our statewide test as a graduation requirement. I’m getting my superintendent to write my recommendation to attest to this and say how I played a major role in convincing the board and he will also comment on my presentation skills and maturity. I also attended the Governor’s School for Health Care during the summer. However, I have a 4.2/5.0 GPA and 30 ACT and only took two subject tests. I noticed that Harvard requires three.

Is it worth applying to Harvard despite the low scores? I know that grades and standardized scores are always first, but maybe these activities may help? Any suggestions with top schools who value leadership?

I don’t think that grades and standardized test scores come first at Harvard, at all.

I am assuming you did all those things to be of service, and not just to get into a school, and that that will come through in your application.

Take a 3rd subject test in January, so you can apply, and don’t worry too much about the results, either.

Harvard really does look at the whole person.

Also getting in or not getting in doesn’t really say that you are wonderful or not wonderful, as a person. There is a lot of randomness in the whole thing.

So, apply to Harvard and to some other schools you would like to go to, without expectations either way.

Apply. You have a chance. Your stats are acceptable for Harvard and similar schools. Your ECs are extraordinary. Take the 3rd SAT II in Jan. Of course, make sure you have safeties and matches that you love and can afford.

the only subject tests i think i can take are us history and chem(i took both subjects last year) and lit although id prolly do really bad in lit. I can still send in subject tests even if I take the SAT II’s in Jan? Also, I know this probably won’t work but if I don’t take the subject test, can my application still be looked at?

does anyone have any experience with only sending in two subject tests?

I’m fairly confident that if you don’t send in a third subject test you won’t get accepted. Just do it. You’ve got a chance.
