I have to write an article on the school’s basketball team, and I plan on interviewing the coach. Any thoughts on what questions I should ask?

Here’s what I have so far -

1) What expectations do you have for a team that went to the state tournament last year? Is the team poised to win it all?

2) What is the team’s mindset with regards to offense? Post-up players/interior scoring, drive-and-kick, spread the floor, backdoor cuts, etc.

3) What would you like to stress on defense? Full-court press that leads to turnovers and fastbreaks, a stingy half-court set, or a combination of the two.

You could possibly try some easier questions too:

What are the team dynamics like?

Who will be leading the (insert basketball team name here.)

Etc. Just some easy questions.

Hey, I was a sports editor once. People tend to not care about game plans but rather team dynamics, interactions, expectations and stuff, like “human characters.” You should definitely interview the team captain, and maybe another team member. For students, ask them about their practice habits, goals for the year, comments on the coach, interactions among team members, preparations before a big game, parental support. For the coach, ask about his opinion of this year’s players compared to previous years, strength of the team, goals, what he’s looking forward to, how he stay level headed under pressure.
Always end by asking if he has any additional comments.

Hope this helps.
