School Newspaper?

Why do people write for their school newspaper? I just don’t get it. Maybe I’m just thinking of my school’s horrible paper, but It makes me suspicious. Are there actually good school newspapers out there that don’t have made up facts and attempt to cover topics that apparently weren’t researched?

As someone who is interested in journalism and has done several journalism projects independently, I cringe whenever I see that thing.

because i’ve always wanted to know how it works and i love the people in my class

our class has really good chemistry together and we come up with different, creative ideas for the paper each issue. and yes, you will have the stupid #$% students who forge facts, etc, but honestly, that’s like 2 people out of a class of 30.

Well, my school has a small newspaper which doesn’t really report news (other than school news), and a lot of it is made up of reviews and opinions essays, as well as some more “creative” articles. There’s also an art section.

I’d guess that people write because they’re interested in journalism or they want it to look good in college. Personally, I like to write for my school paper for two reasons: I love to write, and I like to express my ideas and opinions (and occasionally, my creativity in the art section) through the best way I know how: writing.

Like I said, the paper is nothing impressive. It’s very small, and the school doesn’t take much interest-not a lot of people are involved, and not a lot of people read it. But the people who are involved are very dedicated, and I’d love to try and help the paper grow into something bigger, which is what we’re all trying to accomplish.

I have been the editor of my school for three years now. Currently, we have three staff writers and our advisor and our paper is online so it is updated almost everyday. I think it is important to write (and read) your school paper because it promotes school unity, informs you about certain actions and it is fun. I love to write and express my opinions.

I’m very proud of [our school newspaper](http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/gargoyle/). We used to issue print editions every month or so, but have now fully transitioned to our online edition.

I was in our school’s Journalism class last year. (Many of us worked on articles outside of school, but most of our work was produced in class). All of us took our positions seriously. All articles, even time-sensitive news stories, were thoroughly fact-checked before publication. Occassionally, someone would point out an error, and we’d immediately make a correction.

I didn’t join the class this year to free up my schedule for other classes, but I still contribute material.

^ unitvector, that’s a really nice website, did a student design it?

^ Yes, one of my friends designed the site. Functionality (posting articles, moderating comments, etc.) is powered by the Drupal content management system.
