I am an academic. What can I say?

@Seabasstian

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the time limit kind of screwed me over a bit, and I understand that. But I believe that the time limit was set in place for the sole purpose of keeping video submissions relative. As in, I don’t think the admissions committee wants to sit through 10 minutes of bad work. That would waste their time. I think being over the time limit will hurt me a bit, but if they like my submission, it shouldn’t affect their decision at all. fingers crossed

I got my Letters of Rec from:

 1. Religion Teacher/Campus Ministry Leader (he knows me pretty well/I read his recommendation and it was really good).
 2. Video Production Teacher (I didn’t get to read it, but it was lengthy, so I hope it was nothing but positive)
 3. Drama Teacher (I have had him for four years and he probably knows me the best (work ethic/professionally) out of all the recommenders)

Fankini;
I see what you are saying. It makes sense. I don’t think they’d automatically shut you out because you’re about 45 seconds over time. Good luck! I’m anxiously awaiting the last week of March. When I went for a tour about 2 months ago, the admissions counselor said 54 of about 1100 applicants are accepted to the Film and TV program so I’m realllly nervous. Good luck once again! Hope we can stay in touch.

@Seabasstian

Yep, I cannot wait till April 1st. It’s going to be stressful. I’m preparing myself for a denial though. Don’t want to get my hopes up at all. It’s a dream, and I need to keep reminding myself of that fact. I hope to see you there as well, and good luck to you!

Fankini;
Yeah same here. I’m preparing myself for a worst case scenario, but at the same time I’m trying to be positive about it. We’ll see in a few weeks!

Hey guys! I’m a current SCA student. I’d love to answer any of your questions. :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1466434-im-cinematic-arts-major-any-questions.html#post15538839</a></p>

Hey everyone!

Firstly, I’d like to say that I am really impressed with the amount of talent on this thread!
Also, I would like anyone’s honest opinion on my visual sample. I am a current student at USC (transferred in spring 2013) and am trying to transfer into production. I am a girl, btw :)

Its a visual with a basic shot design, my goal was basically to prove that I can tell a story visually. To me, if there is no story that makes sense (no matter how visually amazing it is) there is no film. This is my first real film (I have dabbled with a camera but never intentionally made a film). It is not the greatest cinematographic wise, but There is a clear story and I had a lot of fun with my brother shooting it. Also I am a bit worried because there are minor continuity issues and I hope it doesn’t jepordize me too much :o

I also applied to critical studies. I’d like to get into at least one of them. my writing sample was a comparison between Bronte’s “Jane Eyre” and the 2011 screenplay adaptation.

Please tell me what you think!! I have gotten accolades from a professor at the school i attended before I started at USC and would like more people who are film minded!

Almost decision day…almost…

As my friend told me today, I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Exactly…I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I got denied. But I’m hanging on to that little speck of hope that I have…

Is USC your top choice? Did you also apply to any other film schools?

Yeah, USC has always been my #1 choice. My second choice would be UCLA, then NYU, and finally CalArts. My backup is UCSD.

Today I was notified of my acceptance into Emerson! I hope Emerson could serve as some indicator of my acceptance into USC. I know they are two different schools and look at different things, but I would like to think it is a good indicator that it is in fact a positive possibility I’ll get into SCA

Fankini;
Have you heard from NYU?

That’s great! Congrats! I don’t really know much about Emerson, except that many kids applied. And sadly, no. NYU releases decisions in 2 weeks…

Hi Everyone!

I just discovered this thread and wanted to say great job to everyone, all the films posted are awesome and I wish you all the best of luck! I’m also waiting to hear from SCA and I’m excited to see when people start to get in.

I was also wondering if any of you would like to post some constructive criticism regarding my video essay? The link is here for anyone who would like to check it out and I appreciate all comments!

Good luck to everyone!

Wow is all I can say. I definitely think your video trumps any that I have seen so far. Extremely powerful, a wonderful production value, good story. The only thing I’d criticize (but it’s so minimal that it really doesn’t matter) is the character development, i.e. the character’s desire of flight doesn’t really connect, or at least I don’t think it’s too obvious. Are you applying as a freshman or are you transferring?

@NewEyeCon

I applaud you sir. Your submission is absolutely fantastic in every way possible. You make my film look like poop. But honestly, you DESERVE to get accepted. I would be disappointed if you didn’t. Even if I don’t get in, I’ll be happy knowing there are people like you out there making good films. Btw, my submission is titled : Spotlight. Here is the link if you’re interested: <a href=“Spotlight (2012) - USC / NYU Film Application REJECTED - YouTube”>Spotlight (2012) - USC / NYU Film Application REJECTED - YouTube;

NewEye, well done. Did you make all that at home? Or did you get the equipment from a class or something?
Either way, I hope I get to work with you at SC next year. Fight on!

To start I just want to say thanks a bunch for the positive feedback, it means a lot to be able to get come comments on my work and I really appreciate it!

@Seabasstian
Thanks for the constructive comments! The part with the flying was definitely clearer in my head; I wish I had more time to develop it and I can understand why it’s confusing, maybe in the future ill get a chance to do a clearer version of the idea! To answer your question I’m a senior in high school and I’m applying as a Freshman.

@fankini
Thank you for the support, but don’t knock your video, I thought it was fantastic! Your entry was very original, I loved the plot and especially the twist, it was well written, and the contrast between the happiness at the beginning and darkness at the end was very intriguing. My favorite part was when he goes on stage with nothing but him, the light, and the music in the background, It gave a very uneasy feeling. I hope that you get accepted!

Thank you, I am lucky enough to be a part of an amazing film program at my school but all of this video was done at home. The camera and tripod I used were both mine and I just edited from my house. It took a lot of home made camera tricks to pull off some of the shots since I was basically working by myself. I hope to be able to work with you next year as well!
