School of Cinematic Arts Hopefuls-Class of 2014

@breadcleaner I think you’re admitted Undecided to Dornsife.

My D got two letters - one acceptance package from USC (I don’t remember what it said). A second acceptance packet and certificate from SCA. So I agree with Layra - If you didn’t declare a second choice major you CAN be accepted to USC undecided even if you are not accepted to SCA. Just not the other way around. You can’t get into SCA without first being accepted into USC.

thanks to both, that clears up a bunch!

I was wondering;
Do you guys think I’d be out of line to send SCA a short sample (~5pgs) of a script I finished for my senior thesis film? I know they’re crazily busy over there now and I may just be adding unnecessary burden, but I feel like I’d be keeping them updated & showing my continual interest.

Also I recently finished two music videos I acted as both cinematographer and editor on… so im wondering if I should send links to those as well.

Just a couple things to add to my file couldn’t hurt, right? Or would I be overstepping boundaries…

Multiply a “couple of things to my file” by several thousand students wanting to do the same thing and it sometimes becomes a problem at colleges. All the materials needed to be postmarked by December 1st to be included in the file. I think adding additional materials at this late date might not work in your favor. But that’s just an opinion. You could always call and ask.

^^^
True, I’m sure quite a few kids have already sent extra things to be put in their file.

Maybe I should axe the short script sample, or maybe just send the strongest page. But I don’t see how music video links could be much of an imposition. I originally didn’t think it’d hurt too much considering I listed Cinematography as my wanted focus, but then again I’m looking at it from a worried applicant’s point of view rather than a stressed admission officer.
Clearly, because it’s not a required document they don’t HAVE to view it and my app won’t be considered “incomplete” w/o it, but if I happen to be a person on the line in March between admission and rejection, is there no sort of benefit?

Anyone interested in IMD?

Sfxchris,

I would not send it. They have already asked for all they needed - all of that was due Dec. 1. I think sending them more just seems like you are sucking up to the admissions office. I don’t think it is worth the time to send them. Plus, if USC really wanted to see your films/script, they would have included a small note on the application instructing people where to send their additional supplements. Personally, I don’t think it is in your best interest.

Basically, you have until Dec 1 (app deadline for SCA) to come up with a creative sample and submit it with your application. You’ve done that. Great. That was your shot at showing what you can do. They only have a limited amount of time to review/consider each applicant’s supplement, so they purposefully limit what you are asked to submit.

The admissions office at SCA would likely be open to receiving a very brief update re: new and important honors and achievements in your field. So shoot off an email mentioning special awards and accomplishments, as long as it doesn’t require they read pages of scripts or watch film. If your script has been shortlisted for the Nicholls award, or if your film was just accepted to Sundance, or if the Coen Bros would like you to work on their next film this summer… send a short email to the admissions office at SCA and share your great news.

Instead of helping, sending additional unasked for film/links/scripts may show them that you are not confident in the product (your application) you submitted. It further indicates you may be unable to tell a good story (about yourself)–concise, authentic, well-edited and in on time.

P.S. If your film is accepted to your HS film festival, go for it. Send a note to admissions. But do not send the film.

@breadcleaner: you’re admitted to whatever your second choice would be, if you meet the minimum requirements for it. So for instance, I would have gotten into Roski since that was my backup.

Good luck, everyone! Happy holidays. If it makes you guys feel better, I was admitted and I didn’t even know about SCA till the day before apps were due :)

Can you PM me? I have a few questions for you! Sounds like we were in the same position considering I applied last minute

You posted a few months ago, but I just have to say, its nice to see a Writing major. Everyone I know who’s applying to SCA are going for Production!

You posted a few months ago, but I just have to say, its nice to see another Writing major hopeful. Everyone I know who’s applying to SCA are going for Production!

Did anyone have trouble with their submission on Dec. 1? My D’s application says it was submitted on Dec 2, even though the payment and slideroom say Dec 1. Worried!

@mrssoffel

Don’t worry, mine also says it submitted on Dec 2 (it has to do with the time zones I think). I emailed USC and they said as long as it was Dec 1 in your time zone, everything is fine and also eligible for the merit scholarships.

Speaking of merit scholarships, does anyone know if we would be eligible for consideration if we get rejected from SCA but accepted as an undecided?? Both my 1st and 2nd choice were SCA, so does that mean I’m basically out for merit scholarships if I’m not accepted in SCA?

ME!!! Are you a television or film kind of person?

Applicants please remember that posts here are anonymous. A person may or may not be the authority claimed in the message. Madbean and others have spent countless hours volunteering on this forum. It is possible to look up months of posts to determine if an individual has worthwhile advice.

An internet message board is public. Be cautious about sharing personal information.

Hey everybody! I applied to the MFA program, but seeing as I’m also a hopeful for 2014 I thought I’d drop by! I’m applying for the MFA in Film & TV production program.

Hey guys. I got in today. It’s probably been the happiest day of my life. I wasn’t expecting today of all days but it’s quite incredible. It feels like a dream almost. Good luck to all of you and I’m praying we all get in together.

Dreaming.

Hello Dreaming! I was admitted to Film Production on Saturday! What’s your major?
