School of Engineering

i got spring admit 2008 for cal, with a civil/environmental engineering major, but am having second thoughts on this major/school due to how much i hear engineer majors drop out and the overall difficulty in this school/major at Cal.

what are your guys’ opinion on the difficulty of an engineering major, like how plausible it is to get past these four years under this major.

Also, if it is really killer, is it easy/able to transfer to another school/major ?
(i’m thinking math)

Why are you interested in pursuing a degree in CivE? Answer this without thinking the difficulty the academics you expect to face.

my uncle and great-uncle are/were both been civil engineers
as math is my strongest area, i just chose this area

“what are your guys’ opinion on the difficulty of an engineering major, like how plausible it is to get past these four years under this major.”

Engineering, as a major, is hard at every school. You have to put more time and effort into your courses than you did in high school. As long as you don’t have unrealistic expectations of yourself, such as pulling straight A’s while taking 21 units, it shouldn’t be too bad.

The best thing you can do is take a seminar or two on Civil Engineering (there should be one), and see how you do during your first semester. If you do well, you should stay-lower division courses are much harder on grading. If you don’t do to well, you should consider transferring out.

The catch is you would need a 3.0 GPA to transfer to L&S, but if you do have a 3.0+ GPA, that’s still a really good GPA so you may consider staying in CivE.

Overall, be prepared to work very hard. If you find the material to be boring and doesn’t motivate you to succeed in those courses, perhaps you should look at other areas.

I thought CAL does not accept spring transfers. Is this a recent policy change I am not aware of? I am planning on doing a spring/winter transfer, and if this is a recent change that would be great news.

I dunno, but i got into the Fall extension program (GPA inflation? :)).
Is there any specific time that i need to transfer out by to change my major by?
And anyone else have any opinions on an CivE major’s difficulty? Like my friend said that engineering is curved really generously… good or bad lol
