HI… My daughter is a sophomore at PITT, interested in pre-med. She was originally thinking about majoring in neuroscience, but recently is looking into switching to Rehabilitation Sciences. Does anyone know if this is a good fit with premed and does anyone have any advice on which of the majors in the SHRS works for premed studies?

If there anyone out there (or knows someone) who majored in RS and took the MCAT/or is attending medical school - I would love to hear your story.

@plplpl, don’t mean to hijack your thread, but did your daughter find a problem with the neuroscience department or is Rehabilitation Services just more interesting to her? I ask because my S has recently applied to neuroscience.

No problem with Neuro dept - she is just a sophomore and only took one class in neuroscience and she did like it. She knows a few friends in RS and was looking at the website and just thought the classes sounded interesting. FYI-whenever I visit PITT, I ask a ton of questions - and everyone I ever spoke to about neuroscience said great things about the department.

From what I’ve heard, the Rehab Science major is more geared toward those who are interested in PT/OT. I came to Pitt as a prospective RS major, thinking I wanted to be a PT. I ended up changing to pre-med, and switched my major to chemistry because I liked it and I thought it would be easier to get my prereqs in (bio, gen chem, orgo, etc). (I have since graduated and decided to become a PA instead - changed my mind so many times like everyone else!)

Ultimately, it’s up to your daughter to decide what major interests her the most. I would say that it’s probably easier to get all of the prereq classes completed in a “hard” science major, since you have to take those classes anyway to complete your major. From what I remember, SHRS does not require orgo 2 or physics 2, so if she does not complete these classes this year, they may be more difficult to fit in later. However, being in SHRS exposes you to classes such as anatomy, pharmacology, and nutrition, which she may find more interesting and definitely relevant to med school! SHRS has a variety of majors such as rehab science, nutrition, even emergency medicine - to med schools, that may really set her apart from the hordes of bio majors that apply.

To be pre-med, it really doesn’t matter what you major in as long as those prereq science classes are completed. I’ve heard of people majoring in music and applying to med school. Whatever interests your daughter the most is really the best option. She should look further into the majors (I think SHRS typically has an open house each semester) and apply if she’s interested.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

thanks clarinetz, your comments about the SHRS classes such as anatomy etc. is exactly the reason why she is considering switching to SHRS. I will forward your comments to my d and hopefully that will help her with her decision.
