School options since SDSU admission may not be in the cards?

I have moved several posts about other school options for students still waiting for their SDSU admission decisions. I am trying to keep the SDSU Freshman Class from being derailed from several side bar conservations.

My kid could be so lucky. Similar stats, 1480 SAT (test blind understood). 0 for 6. Aerospace. Denials: UCI, UCD, UCSD. No Word: SLO, CPP, SDSU. I’ll be overjoyed if he gets even a WL at this point. He’s stoically sad all week. The only consolation (also sad) has been that his friends have been somewhat in the same boat. It’s all relative, I’d say. An unwanted gap year or CCC transfer can be pretty devastating if you’ve worked hard and wanted to go away to 4 year as he has. Be happy!!! Congrats to your D. Very impressive.

That’s a tough set of responses. We are in a similar boat as far as SDSU and CA in-state overall is concerned, just a longer list of UC rejections for our DS24 with preferred major Computer Science. Our saving grace is that we applied EA for a few OOS options. If you are looking for ideas that might still work, take a look at U of Utah for example. Too late for WUE, but in-state tuition starting with year 2 is on par with UCs roughly.

I appreciate the ideas! Getting in-state can be very difficult or impossible once you start as OOS (no sure how tough Utah is about that). Money’s an issue so my (he’s too bummed out at the moment) ā€˜Plan C’ is apply (or be redirected) to Chico State or Sac State as Undeclared or Mech E (neither has Aero). They’re not impacted so applications still being accepted. They weren’t on his list (we visited Chico State when we went up to Davis) but I think he’ll come around since he really wants the 4-year college experience. We’re now a long way from initial hopes. Does anyone know if late (WL or Redirect) admits result in poorer financial aid outcomes bc financial aid seems to be 'first-come/first-serve"? That would be a 1-2 punch.

Do not give up on this and good luck! One of these will come through. Not sure if you are dead set on instate only but I second the notion that some OOS have options, including aero, and are still taking applications - UofU being an example, ASU, etc.

I also remember reading in other threads about Alabama-Huntsville being a great aero option due to both cost (OOS merit) and heavy presence of NASA in town.

If you are interested in Utah a little info - my son is there and he loves it. The campus is really nice and the incoming freshman class is guaranteed on campus housing. Obviously out-of-state is extremely expensive, but Utah is one of easiest states to establish residency and you can do it after one year. I won’t get into all of the requirements, but he would have to stay in Utah next summer for sure to establish residency. There are other requirements, but compared to other states it is very doable. Also because Utah bills by the credit he could take a light load, 12 credits his first two semesters, and then take two classes over the summer. All summer classes at Utah are billed at the in-state rate regardless of residency status. Good luck with whatever you and your son decide.

Does your student have ELC status so he might be referred to UC Merced? Or maybe he could try to apply late. I know many kids roll their eyes, but is really a fantastic school - and still new and growing.

My D23 had the same thing happen last year. Stats were inline for bio for mid UC’s 3.9/4.3 w 8 APs, all 4s & 5s. Did all the things. Medical internship, dance, choir etc we were shocked. Applied to 6 - all CA - waitlisted 2, rejected 4. In retrospect she didn’t apply to a safety safety or OOS and was ELC. She didn’t want to go to UCM or another Cal Sate with auto acceptance. She took it as a growing experience, got a 6 month internship, a job and became a licensed emt. Made the best out of her year and reapplied. She applied to 12 this time adding some safety’s
, shifting her majors a bit and is in at 3 (SDSU, UCD, UCR) so far all psych/ bio, premed tracked. It was the best thing that could have happened even though we were absolutely devastated last year. My point is a gap year is not always a bad option. Good luck! I feel your situation!!

Thanks for that suggestion (UofU)! I see online that it is a good one. Now I have to get him ā€˜on-board’ as he’s been wandering away from his goals bc of his somber mood. He’s worked at Domino’s all year making pizzas and last night was his first night delivering pizzas. He was so excited to make $150 in tips during a 5-hour shift that he told me ā€œmaybe I should be doing this next yearā€ā€¦so I have a lot to deal with right now. We need an acceptance or two to turn around his emotional state, but first, I also have to convince him to apply elsewhere (ā€œsafetiesā€ to his original safeties). I wish I could just do it for him, but I’ll have to figure out a way to convince him that by doing so, something is likely to work out. 0 for 6 is a tough path to bounce back from. Having CPP and SDSU left (probably WL if anything) is the ā€˜hanging by a thread’ that I have right now. It’s tough and strangely models my own college trek, yet notably I would not have gotten into UCSD, UCLA, and UCSB today. More colleges are needed.

We are visiting there next Saturday and looking forward to it. Thankfully D24 qualified for a WUE scholarship.

@Bgrateful1. Hoping it works out for you kid. Fwiw my friends daughter had tons of AP and great grades. Did CC then transferred to UC. Graduated in 3.5 years only spent 35k total on undergraduate. Had a full time well paying job before her HS friends who went straight to UC. She said it was hard at graduation when all her friends were going to top schools and she was going to CC but in hindsight it was a great thing for her. It’s not what the kids dream about for sure and it almost makes them feel like all their hard work was for nothing when it’s happening and it’s hard to console them. Best of luck that the rest of the acceptances go better for your kid.

I’m persistent and it bothers him. It won’t stop me from trying to make this work. I appreciate your encouragement and suggestions. I just need a small amount of cooperation from him to open up some options. I know an ā€œAcceptā€ will go a long way to encourage him. Thanks.

Very good info. Thank you! I’m going to explore it more with him. Apps due Apr 1.

He doesn’t have ELC status which I was surprised by. I’m now thinking there might be some flaws in his academic record he didn’t share with me. We did his apps together but I didn’t write it down. I’ve pushed him too hard these 4-years and this is exactly the time when that backfires. He’s ā€˜closed off’ on this now. I’m confident it will all work out eventually but as I was myself devasted when all my friends went off to college, I think it will hurt. That was also why I moved to California in the first place, and that has been a huge blessing.

I really appreciate this perspective. Thank you. I know it will work out for him somehow, some way. We’re in Ventura and a bit light on aviation jobs here. The new-found tip money from pizza delivery will eventually wear off and I’ll make sure to remind him he can go to college and deliver pizzas at the same time. He loves aeronautics so will eventually ā€œlandā€ somewhere!!!

Thanks for sharing that experience. I have to remind myself it’s his journey and ā€˜turn off’ pushy parent mode at the right times. From most everything you read on this forum, you see how fortunate we are one way or another. For every 1 kid here, there are probably 3 or 4 others still trying to figure it out. I am so proud of my two kids and get to do this all again next year for my D29. Plus I’ve learned all these new acronyms. And a BIG THANKS to Gumbymom for super meaningful information, all the time.

We too are heading to U of Utah to tour for admitted student day this weekend. We have heard positive feedback from current UoU students & families. We still have not received decisions from Cal Poly or SDSU so we are looking at the other options. While we have a DD27 who is a 1st year Business major thriving at CP and we would love #2 to join her. We really wanted CP for the Fire Science/Foresty program. With no decision yet, there is a good chance he isn’t getting accepted and now he seems really set on UofU. He also qualified for WUE scholarship so that really helps the financial side. So many So Cal Kids loved both CP and Utah. We have a month to make some big decisions. CP had a great admitted student day so Utah better level up. lol…

We are in Ventura County also, my son also wants to major in Aero. He is 0/6 so far as well - straight up rejections from UCLA, UCI, UCD, UCSD. Awaiting rejection/waitlist from CP SLO. (didn’t get acceptance last week), nothing from SDSU yet. He applied to UCSB for Comp Sci but nothing there yet, either. He got accepted to Aero at Embry-Riddle with a partial scholarship, but that is still super pricey and a long way from home.

Barring a miracle at this point, it’s looking like Ventura College for us then hopefully transfer…

4.45 GPA, AP Calc/Physics/Lang this year, all honors classes throughout HS, four years of two different sports, ASB, other ECs… all strikeouts. My son has been feeling like the last four years were ā€œfor nothingā€ but we are trying to keep his chin up. There are other ways to ā€œget thereā€.

Best of luck to your son!

We’re in a similar situation. In-state, excellent academics (honors + IB degree), strong ECs… Rejected by UCD and UCLA, waitlisted by UCSD. Waiting on SDSU, but starting to look like he’s going out of state. He’s got decent offers from three other schools in other states but is a bit down that the CA schools aren’t interested, and I would have preferred him to be closer to home. Competition is just that fierce, I guess.

I feel like we made a mistake basically only applying to CA schools but OOS tuition is just too expensive for us, and I don’t want to saddle my child with $150K+ of student loans for OOS tuition.

Even though our household income looks great on paper, living in Ventura County is not cheap. I’m know our FAFSA got thrown in the trash, basically.

I can’t help but get jaded with all the OOS acceptances to CA schools. I know there is supposedly a cap on them etc, but it sure ā€œfeelsā€ like (based on the acceptances posted) that more kids are being accepted OOS than in-state kids, and that is discouraging for people that have lived here in CA their whole lives. There isn’t enough space in our schools for local kids that by most metrics should be qualified to attend. (Since we don’t know why we have been rejected so far, it is hard to know what is true and what is gut feel/emotion)
