Hello I’m an African-American boy, who is currently in 8th grade. For my middle school career I’ve had all A’s nothing below an A- and all good comments from teachers. I’m also an athlete, but not a star one.
I’ve known a few people who’ve gone to top boarding schools, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Andover, Exeter etc… and I’m just wondering if I have any chance of going to any of these schools.
Also I participate in Extra Cirriculars such as student council math team yearbook… and also do community service at a local library and retirement homes etc… I have visited these schools but don’t know whether to apply or not. the interviews have been good, all lasting for at least 35 minutes so i guess interviews shouldn’t be awful. My teachers like me, at least i hope they do but I’ve explained to them my situation, and they said that they will write a “glowing” recommendation. Also I have shown my parents some rough drafts of essays and they said I come off as very likable, which I guess is a good thing. But if you need any additional information or anything like that just post it.
P.S. Oh yea I heard FA is a big deal, and I DO NOT NEED it and i got a 96 on ssat, which proves theres no grade inflation
Agreed, you should be a shoe in…but I sense your reservation lies elsewhere…Make no mistake about it, prep schools like these are pretentious, flaunt their wealth in ugly ways. One school that you referenced had parents wear different color name tags on Family Weekend to reflect donors over the $2K mark! It was embarrassing that the school would so blatantly reflect that as part of their values. Someone clearly missed the “Character, integrity, and responsible citizenship” talk. Be aware of what you are getting into. The education is generally good but a strong public school is just as good. We have experience with both.
@minnesotaboy, I suggest you not pay too much attention to the previous post. Do your own research with your parents’ help. Boarding school may or may not be right for you or for your family, but before you decide, try to get information that is as unbiased as possible and form your own opinion. Best of luck to you in high school, whatever you decide!
Sorry @CaliMex…that wouldn’t be cool! But my point for @minnesotaboy remains. No school is perfect. Each will have its drawbacks. Try to know what they are before you arrive to know whether you can tolerate them. AND, be sure to take advice from people who have experience with the schools you reference. The elite eight are very different than other boarding schools. BTW, I would never tell you to “ignore” ^^ someone else’s opinions as their experiences are individual and factual. Best of Luck in your endeavors!
Do you want to go? Were there any schools you got a weird vibe from? You sound like a great candidate. Apply and make your decision after M10- Boarding schools can provide many unique opportunities ( diversity, independence, wide range of classes and clubs…) but they are still just high school. Each school has its own culture but teenagers are teenagers… No school is perfect.
