School Play Director and Playwright. Yearbook President and Main Photographer. Help?

Hey! I’m in desperate need of help in narrowing down my colleges.

I’m in Puerto Rico, and just survived Hurricane Maria. Just got my signal, horribly slow. No power. Impossible for pages to load. Need to search for colleges. I don’t live in the city where signal and electricity is most abundant, and traveling under hours of traffic is difficult during this time.

I go to one of Puerto Rico’s most renown private schools. 500 students, very small, easy to distinguish myself. I’ve been in school plays for five years, playing major characters with singing, dancing, and monologues; I also assisted in writing scripts. Senior year, I’m Director and Main Playwright.

My essay? Bomb. My extracurriculars? Bomb. My recommendations? Bomb. My GPA? Bomb-ish.

I have a 3.75 GPA. My school only offers 5 AP classes; all available in Senior Year. Taking AP Art History, AP English, AP Spanish. Straight A student except in Math, I suffer from dyscalculia. My report card for the entirety of highschool has been A A A A A A A C, solely because of Math, lol. I’m not perfect, what can I say? But my flaws bring out the best in me. They make me an interesting person.

[ul][]I speak English, Spanish, and have been learning French since 9th Grade. School didn’t offer any languages. Wanted to show colleges I work outside the classroom. Boom.
[
]Same with instruments. Couldn’t take Band and Drama at the same time. Learning Guitar outside of school as well, for recreational purposes.
[]I’m my school’s main photographer, been doing this since 10th grade. I’m President of the Photojournalism/Yearbook Committee. I do a lot!
[
]I’ve participated in Public Speaking Competitions; I was one of the founding members of my school’s English Forensics League; we reached 3rd place in our first year. My first time competing I won 6th place out of 50 or so students in my category.
[li]I have been Secretary of Student Council two years in a row. I announced school events and achievements every single morning via the intercom. Documented the entire school year. [/ul][/li]Those are my main extracurriculars. All the other ones ended up being associated with the ones I already have. (Example: I was in Environmental Club to document it w/ my photography, for instance.) I also like to draw.

So, ya. I’m a hard worker. I’m also a lesbian and abused, lol, which exemplifies how incredible my efforts were. Did I mention I just survived a Category 5 Hurricane? However, because the SAT is an American test, most schools in the island don’t really focus on the skills necessary to get an above average score. Not that the schools aren’t difficult, they just teach in their own way. Going to study in the States isn’t very common these days for Puerto Ricans.

Been taking SAT courses since the beginning of HS. Money money money. Money that could’ve been used for better things. 1100 SAT score. Kill me. SAT doesn’t say anything about my intelligence, my commitment, or my passion, but whatever.

I’m interested in studying Law w/ a minor in Art History. I like cities and traveling. I want a challenging school, but most of the good ones require an impossible SAT. Ideal states would be California, New York, Massachussetts, and Washington D.C. Would appreciate an artsy school focused on extracurriculars. Lend a girl a hand?

NYU’s my dream school. 1400 SAT. Hella reach. Would appreciate similar schools that aren’t as selective. Thanks if you read!

Law school is a postgraduate program. You can major in whatever you feel like for your bachelor’s degree.

How much can your parents pay? Have they run any of the Net Price Calculators at the college websites?

Why NYU?

Did you have accommodations for your dyscalculia when you took the SAT?

Have you chacked out the list of test-optional and no test places at fairtest.org ? Bryn Mawr is on that list. It has a terrific Art History department and a strong record of getting its graduates into law school.

(Thanks to @warblersrule for editing my intro post, had no idea how to bullet!)
@happymomof1

My parent is able to pay; my father owns several properties and lives off of a constant rent revenue. He’s been saving money for college since I was in middle school. No problems there. And I’ll try that out, thank you.

Why NYU:

  • I’m a very artistic person. Being surrounded by museums, galleries, theatres is a necessity to me. As an aspiring art historian, I feel a city like New York is ideal.
  • I’m looking for a school that values extracurricular activities and the arts. NYU focuses on that!
  • Has a very powerful Art History program.
  • Strong LGBT presence. Very unified community.
  • Again, I like cities. Public transport, bustling streets… I came from the Puerto Rican countryside, so.
  • Statistically, NYU has a very diverse population. I would like a school with people of various ethnicities; gives me a greater perspective in class discussions.
  • The travel abroad program is spectacular, which I definitely intend to take full advantage of.
  • Love the city campus. I don’t mind that NYU isn’t too sports centred or anything.

So ya, just schools with similar characteristics would be great.
Nope! Because I planned to have my dyscalculia tested before the SAT. Then Hurricane Irma and then Maria came, cancelling both my SAT and my disability test.

I’ll check it out. If any more schools come to mind, let me know. Additionally, if you know of any other members who might be able to help me out, I would appreciate their input. Thank you!

Bump!

Patience, padawan. You do celebrate Thanksgiving in PR, right? You posted in the middle of the night prior to a holiday. It may be next Monday before the majority of readers are back in their normal town with their normal schedule and think to check in.

You’re a genuine catch and the perfect college is out there… just give it a few days for people to get back and make some recommendations.

@Milee30
HAHAHAHA sorry. Thanks, forum parent. You’re totally right. Just got Internet connection so I’ve been super disoriented! (If I post late at night it’s bc signal only works when no one’s awake, sorry.) Holidays are the last thing on my mind at the moment. Been freaking out, but I appreciate your comment so much! I’ll check back in next week. XO
