School Spirit in the Cal State System

Okay. Maybe I’m the only one who is bothered by this, but when I was at San Jose State back in 2001, I met so many students complaining about how much their school sucks. They spoke in many generalities about their school not being a UC, and how their future looks gloomy – even though SJSU has a reasonable to excellent record regarding job placement among graduates. It was a SERIOUS problem, and we were in nowhere near as bad of a recession as we are in now. Also, looking at other Cal State reviews on $tudent$ review . com, it seems this low self-esteem epidemic plagues most Cal State campuses – even during times when the economy was doing well. To be fair, I also saw this attitude, but to a lesser extent, at UC Davis.

I currently go to Auburn, pursuing my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although it doesn’t have the same name recognition as the UC system or Georgia Tech, the undergraduate students have lots of school spirit, and they don’t seem too worried about the future.

So, my question is to current Cal State students. How is the school spirit on your campus? Are most of your fellow students proud to be students of the school they attend, and are they optimistic about their future? For those who are not, what do you think is causing it? Also, if you’re a UC student, and you feel compelled to chime in, please feel free…

My two sons are students at Sacramento State University and seem to have a positive attitude about their situation. However, I think it has a lot to do with their majors; Geology and Physics. They know that even though they will graduate from a CSU they will have much better career prospects than most graduates of UCs who major in subjects like English, Psychology, History, Philosophy and Communications.

Cal Poly and San Diego State have lots of school spirit. Whenever I run into alums or students from there, people are always proud of their school. It helps that they are great schools and that their sports teams are so good also.

I can tell you that UC Davis students have a lot of Aggie Pride!!!

There are probably significant variations between campuses as well as students.

Some CSUs may be heavy with commuter students, so the campus vibe may resemble that of a community college.

Students attending their last choice school because they got rejected at all others may be less positive than those for whom the school was their first choice.
