School used to fit but now doesn't

What made a school that you thought fit no longer fit anymore?

Ex: Sally thought she was applying to school that was very geeky and artsy but after being admitted and attending the admitted students event it turned out to be a sports centric party school.

or

Roger used to be really into sports and applied to and currently attends a big ten school. midway through his college freshman year he found out that he really like art and theatre now wants to transfer.

Roger should have attended Northwestern.

On a more serious note, however, the second example isn’t terribly realistic. What Big Ten school doesn’t have both arts and theatre departments? Maybe Purdue? No other B10 school comes to mind (and UMich is strong in the arts, so it’s not like arts and big time football can’t coexist).

One of the key strengths of those giant publics is that they offer almost any major you can think of under the sun.

Don’t most or all Big Ten schools have art and/or theater departments?

I can see the situation happening if the student attends an academically specialized school and later wants to change to a major which is limited or nonexistent there.

A lot of kids who attend small LACs outgrow them – it was a fit when they were fearful freshmen, but by the time they’re juniors/seniors they’re ready for a bigger pond. (Enter semester/year abroad, lol)

It happened to both my kids. For D, it was because she realized she didn’t want to major in a hard science, and the alternative offerings at her LAC did not appeal to her. For S, it was because he started out in a very targeted program but decided against it - and while the school was great for that program, he wasn’t interested in it for anything else.
