Schools in my range?

Hi I’m a high school junior looking for colleges in my range for scores.
I have a 3.75 uw gpa
8 AP classes
4 honors classes
ACT 30

My EC’s are
Football for 10 years
Baseball for 9 years
Basketball for 8 years
Student council 2 years
AFK (organization where I mentor kids with disabilities) 3 years
Created an Asian Cultural club and president of the club
Computer science honor society
English honor society
Social studies honor society
French honor society
DECA made state both years
Over 100 hours of Community Service

I was looking at schools like University of Washington (in state), UT Austin, UMICH, but I don’t know what others schools would be in my range either reaches or safeties.
Anyone have a good school in mind with my stats, doesn’t matter if it fits me or not.

Thank You!

Where does that GPA place you within your class (if not rank, then percentile, approximately)? U Washington is a great option in state - I think it is a slightly high match for you, but I think you will get in, although maybe only off the wait list. You need to consider what major you are applying for, and how it would affect your chances of acceptance. But you need another in-state public school as a safety school.

I think that U Michigan and UT Austin are reaches for you, and unless money is not an issue, you are probably better off at U Washington.

Do you have any idea what you would like to study/major in? Is money an issue? Would your family’s income/assets qualify you for a lot of financial aid?

We do not do class rank at my school but I would probably be above average in percentile. I was thinking an applied math major but don’t quite know yet. For me money won’t be an issue in which school I would be attending. Just wondering why do you think those two would be reaches for me? Is that based off stats or just being out of state?

For an example of a school that might be within your range, look into the University of Rochester, then consider other schools in its statistical vicinity, as well as some less challenging admits:

I also would guess that UT Austin and U.Michigan would be reaches, both because of being out of state plus your GPA. UT Austin and U.Michigan are both very good universities. I just do not know whether they are worth the greater cost plus the traveling (and a good winter coat for Michigan) compared to U.Washington which is also very good.

Your guidance counselor would know better than I how good your chances are at U.Washington. A 3.75 GPA would just barely put you in the middle 50% there. I would add Washington State as an in-state safety.

I would certainly expect that a 3.75 would put you above the median GPA in your high school, unless your high school is unusual in some way.

Are you tempted to look at anything just to the north of you? U.Victoria, UBC, and Simon Fraser are options.

By the way I was also an applied math major. If I were to do it again, I would probably still be an applied math major.

Not really, I hadn’t really thought of even looking at schools in Canada but it does seem like an option now that you say it. Is an applied math major fairly hard to get into? I know majors like CS and business are harder but how hard would an applied math be?
Thank you!

U need to provide a lot more info. How geographically open are you ? How important is aid ? What’s your major ? Publics school - name yiur school outside the top 12 -15 but if money is an issue than Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina, Miami Ohio etc have great aid. But you’ll get into most any public school in the country. Target schools would be Florida state. Pitt Maryland. Delaware. But any big 10 school not named Michigan or northwestern for example you’d likely get into.

You’ll have many options

I am not sure. Some schools do not admit by major. My guess is that for schools that do admit by major math is probably a bit easier than CS for admissions. I do not know what the situation is for Washington, WSU, or other schools in your area.

By the way, as an applied math major it would be helpful for you to also take some compute science courses.

I am in Seattle Washington which is why UW is one of my top choices. Finically college won’t be a problem. I don’t quite know what exact major but I was thinking about applied maths. Yea Northwestern or UMICH would probably a reach school for me.

Sorry if this is a bit intruding but I was wondering what kind of job you have because you have an applied math major. If you don’t feel comfortable you don’t have to answer just wondering what kind of jobs an applied math major offers. I have taken AP CSP and might take CSA next year.

Back to your question of other schools - looking at US News top schools for applied math, UW is a great school so if you get in. Colorado is on the list and it’s fairly easy to get in. Not great merit though. MN is on the list - you’d likely get in. When my son applied he got an application waiver. Just get on their mailing list. Why not Oregon, Idaho, Montana or any other school. It’s like engineering - you’re going to get a job with that major.

Data is key today - whether as an analyst, actuary, operations, finance - you’re going to find a home.

Even if you go to W Washington or Southern Oregon or Evergreen State. Just saying - it’s like engineering - your major overrides the pedigree of the school you are looking at.

UMaine would be a safety and you’d probably fit in well. Normally I’d say Clemson would be a safety but this year was absolutely insane. If next year they are back to their normal number of applicants, I’d consider it a safety for you. Wake Forest is probably a hard target and UConn is probably a match or safety. Depending on what you are interested in I’d look into University of Rochester & BU or BC. If you are looking for affordability, look into some of the SUNY schools.
