Schools in NE = to UCLA

I’m currently attending SDSU and am considering transferring home to a JC and then to another school. I definitely would like to transfer to a school that is better academically and ranked higher than SDSU and also am looking for a school that has about the same academic ranking as UCLA. I am looking for schools in the North East or New England area that are relatively close to the coast and possibly big cities; however these preferences are not set in stone. Could anyone suggest any schools that fit the criteria or help with my search?

According to the 2009 Princeton Review, UCLA has an academic rating of 80.

[Test Prep: GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, SAT, ACT, and More | The Princeton Review](<a href=“College Search | Find Colleges | The Princeton Review”>College Search | Find Colleges | The Princeton Review)

This would be comparable to BU and Northeastern in the Boston area.

This is on-line at [Test Prep: GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, SAT, ACT, and More | The Princeton Review](http://www.princetonreview.com). Under the left column where the title is “The Basics”, click on Academic & Majors and you will then see the Academic Rating in the upper right.

NU: 78
BU: 84

Oh please. PR ranking??? That’s worse than the Brit international rankings.

The only comparable schools might be Penn State and maybe Cornell.

Thank you very much for your help 1980collegegrad.

And to barrons: What is PR ranking? Thanks for your input as well.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

NYU, Barnard if you’re female, JHU, Boston College, Vassar, Sarah Lawrence.

It would help if we knew grades and SATs. Also, what don’t you like about current school?

PR = Princeton Review. They give “ratings” using its own methodology. Most people, if not all, would put UCLA above Northeastern/Boston U though.

If you go by US News college ranking, I think Tufts is ranked about the same as UCLA.

Looks like Barrons Profiles of American Colleges uses a different methodology than the Princeton Review.

Thanks a lot for all the responses. I don’t really like the reputation of my current school, with drug busts and party culture in that it seems like everyone that goes here is only going here to get wasted. It doesn’t make me feel respectable. My HS grades, although I never saw my final transcripts, were about a 3.7 W gpa maybe a little higher, and 1840 SAT. And please note that if I am going to transfer I would most likely go through a JC since it’s easier to transfer from a JC than 4 year univ.?

For private and out of state colleges going through a JC would be a disadvantage.

Conside retaking the SATs or trying ACTs for a better chance at good NE schools.

Really? I was unaware that going to a JC from out of state or private would be a disadvantage. Well since that rules out it making it easier, I guess my main reason now for going to a JC would be to save my family money.

Colleges in some states give preference to kids coming from a JC at their own state schools. At private colleges students with the strongest possible backgrounds have the advantage.

So the school I come from plays an important role in getting into a private school?

Northeastern and BU seem interesting, same with NYU but I thought that would be way too much of a stretch for me. What about public schools in the area?

Penn State’s Academic Rating is 74 so that is not too far below UCLA. Tufts is much higher at 91 and Cornell’s Academic Rating is also quite high at 89.

NOBODY cares about the stupid PR ratings. They are total BS.

I guess your school was rated very poorly.

Alright instead of just schools about the equivalent to UCLA how about schools that are academically “better” than SDSU?

1980collegegrad,

Can you tell us how PR derived the “academic rating”? What does it measure? What is it based on? You seem to champion it all over different threads on CC; you must know what exactly it is, right?

I’m guessing you’re such a proponent of PR’s system because it inflates the ranking of yours?

Isn’t Brown’s PR rating like 72? The PR is one of the least reliable rating of universities out there.
