Schools like Macalester but more middle of the road?

Daughter would like to study Russian and history. We visited Macalester and found it to be very left in its leaning. We are looking for a more middle of the road type of school. Any suggestions? She loved the size, liked being in town and was hoping to have a mix of international students. She is pretty middle of the road but felt tense there like she was too far right to participate. Thanks for any suggestions.

St. Olaf sure comes to mind in Northfield.

LACs are all pretty lefty, and most of them are in the middle of nowhere. Macalester is more international than most and unique in being in Saint Paul.

Emory would be larger but more middle of the road. It is in a nice suburb of Atlanta. What is the one in Memphis? Rhodes?

Denison, Dickinson maybe. Although they don’t benefit from being in an urban setting.
Wellesley/Barnard as a female.

Urban LACs are tough to find in general, and if you rule out more liberal schools, the pickings get slimmer.

Larger: URichmond.

Thanks, we will look into these schools.

Kalamazoo, Albion, Lawrence, Allegheny, Washington and Jefferson… Kentucky has a nice group of small colleges too: Transylvania, Centre, Berea, Georgetown College, A lot of the Jesuit collegees might work…Marquette, St. Louis, Xavier, Creighton, Loyola-Chicago, Scranton. They aren’t small, but there is nothing large or overwhelming about them, either. They tend to be open-minded and attract a a decent % of foreign students.

Perhaps some of the schools with a religious heritage, but are historically open-minded?
Fordham, Santa Clara U, U San Francisco, U Seattle, Loyola Marymount, U San Diego, Saint Louis U, Loyola New Orleans, Loyola Chicago (although this one is large), and lovely little U Portland.

Denison (half hour to Columbus)
Kenyon (45 minutes to Columbus)
Davidson (Just outside Charlotte)
Rhodes (Memphis)
Univ. of Richmond
Agnes Scott (Women’s college in Decatur/ Atlanta)
Colorado College (Colorado Springs)

Holy Cross-located in mid-size Worcester(1 hour) from Boston. HC is middle of the road political spectrum.

You could add Furman, suburban Greenville, SC, to the mix.

Can she get into Carleton? If so, half hour to Twin Cities, and very strong in Russian.

Good luck!

U Richmond, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Connecticut College, Dickinson, Lehigh (not an LAC but still on the small side)
