I’m interested in RIT due to it’s major focus towards technology / sciences, but also it’s ability to provide more media / design classes at the same time. I’m planning on majoring in computer science and possibly minoring in game development.
I really like RIT, but the location may be a bit too cold for me; when I went to visit in later April there was still some snow on the ground. What are some other schools that are similar to RIT but in a not-so-frigid area? As for distance, I live near Boston in Massachusetts and would mainly like to stay in New England if possible, but I am open to suggestions outside of the area if the school is a good match.
My experience living in that part of upstate NY is that during most winters, there are periodic breaks between cold snaps. And the lake moderates temperatures somewhat, although it does cause snow. RIT has a fantastic program, as you say, and I wouldn’t let the weather dissuade you.
These are some good replies, and have made me a bit less fearful of the colder times of the year up in Rochester. When I went to visit we had a random week of warm weather in Massachusetts after the tough Winter, making it that much worse to be greeted with a snowy morning. I am, however, still interested in some other schools to also put on my list of applications if anyone has any suggestions.
I know what you mean about the cold. When we visited Champlain College - around 100 miles from Canadian border - it was noticeably colder than in southern New England. RIT is a great school. My son was admitted to the game design and development major and the only reason we eliminated it is that it was too far for him - an 8-hour drive and he wanted to be closer to home. Don’t forget the tunnel system though!
