Schools similar to size/feel to UMass

Been to a variety of schools and my son really like UMass Amherst. He liked that it was a campus, mid sized (22k students), and seemed to have school spirit, but it wasn’t an over the top rah rah school. We’re looking to compare it to similar schools, but are having trouble finding them. Pitt was nice, but didn’t have the campus he’s looking for. We’re going to look at UConn. Any other suggestions? Thank you:)

Take a look at University of Delaware

Thank you! We’re actually going there tomorrow:). They don’t have his exact major (public health or science, tech and society), but they do have a medical diagnostics major that looks interesting to him! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg. Very similar in many ways. Beautiful area. School gets lots of great students, especially from Northern Virginia. School has a very big presence in DC area. Students/alums LOVE the school.

Also Miami of Ohio.

Good luck! Enjoy the visits!

UMASS has Amherst. Storrs (UConn) is in the middle of nowhere. It’s hard to find “rah rah” schools in New England where college sports just doesn’t have the same emphasis as it does in other parts of the country. You might want to consider Maryland.

Not sure he will like being in the middle of nowhere. He doesn’t want super rah rah, but he does want some school spirit and the ability to support sports teams, etc. Thanks so much for the suggestions! I really appreciate it.

Rhode Island - slightly smaller but great campus

Good ideas above. Miami of Ohio might be another option to consider. SUNY Buffalo is a bit bigger and SUNY Binghamton is a bit smaller but they may be worth looking into as well.

UConn is really rah rah. It’s in a fairly rural location (although less than 30m to Hartford) but they have created a nice downtown area called Storrs Center. The campus is huge and feels very bustly. When you’re on campus or around Storrs Center it doesn’t feel “midde of nowhere”.

Agree with Binghamton recommendation.

My DD looked at SUNY Bing, UConn, UMass and Rutgers.

She attended SUNY Bing …it is a good value for OOS students.

Thank you! I don’t think Bing has a major he’s interested in, although I have to double check.

University of Vermont?
