Schools That Have to Be Accepted to First?

I’ve been updating the master spreadsheet for programs my D is applying to for the last two days and it just occurred to me that in my searches that I forgot to look for programs that require auditionees to apply to, AND be accepted to the school BEFORE auditions. I have in my old notes that Viterbo is one. Any other schools that you know of that have this requirement?

Thanks for your help.

U of Michigan “prescreens” academics based on the application before an invitation to audition is issued. This is NOT an academic acceptance though, just a prescreening. A student can later be rejected for academic reasons, but you can’t get an audition unless you pass the prescreening.

Otterbein–what follows is a brief excerpt from their Dept. website: You need only apply to Otterbein before you request an audition. But you must be admitted to Otterbein before your actual audition date.

Whenever you can get a decision on the school accepting you or not before an audition is a good thing. It’s lovely to know going in that the school will take you academically, and you “only” have the audition hurdle. On the other hand, if the school doesn’t accept you academically, you’ve saved yourself a trip, time and money by not auditioning.

I applaud any school that manages to provide some sort of weeding out or screening tool or non-binding EA or something so that people who really have no chance, either due to academic reasons or lack of training/experience, don’t waste valuable resources auditioning in hopeless cases.

I agree wholeheartedly. When I hear the facts of 1000 kids applying for 20 or less spots, I wish they would narrow it down so only 400 kids applied!

If I understand your question, Penn State requires academic admission to the school prior to auditions.

Hmm, that doesn’t sound right about Penn State unless something has changed? For one thing, my kid got in there for the BFA in MT program and got just ONE acceptance (not a separate academic one) a few days after her audition, which was the final audition day of that cycle (end of Feb.). I have had other students admitted and rejected to Penn State for MT since then and they too, got one outcome and not a separate academic one and did not get accepted to the university prior to their audition. Not to mention that Penn State even does walk ins.

Please correct me if I am wrong or if this has changed.

I don’t know about the coming year, but Soozievt, your experience was ours (minus the acceptance!) for this past year.

My D did not get her academic acceptance to Penn State til after her audition which unfortunately was a no to the artistic side!

Yes, Lulu same here. The nice thing about Penn State is that if you get an academic acceptance, they may ask you to consider another major if you don’t get MT. Of course, most MT folks are not interested in another major, although I’ve heard of some Penn State fans who don’t care what the major is, they just want in! :)

Lol! My D was like who cares when she got her academic acceptance! No way was she going there without a MT offer! I loved it there though!!

You are absolutely right soozievt, they do take walk-ins at unifieds. Which would make my statement impossible. My daughter wanted PSU as her safety school in case she wasn’t offered any opportunities in MT, therefore she was concerned that she meet the academic standards of her first choice which was main campus. Sorry for the confusion.
