I want to major in mechanical, aerospace, or naval engineering (haven’t really decided yet) but I haven’t really got the slightest clue as to where to apply and where I can get in. I used to really want to go to CU Boulder but that’s probably a huge reach for me. I don’t really have very many EC’s and I don’t play any sports. I’ve taken two honors and one AP, all for Spanish, and I got a 3/5 on that. I’m about to begin my senior year and I’ll be taking AP Calc AB and AP Phys Mech. My cumulative thus far is about a 3.12 UW and 3.3 weighted, and my SAT is a 2050 (710 on math and 670 on both CR and WR). I’ve heard good things about Auburn engineering, but again, I have no clue if that’s feasible for someone of my stats. And also if it makes a difference, I go to an extremely competitive private catholic college prep school in Pasadena, CA. Any suggestions?

The SuperMatch on this website is your new best friend. Go there, and personalize everything to your interests. It’ll pop out quite a few different options for you.

Your SAT scores are strong for both Auburn and Boulder engg. You haven’t yet taken the rigorous course load and earned the equivalent GPA that a lot of top schools will want to see, but if the AOs know your school is rigorous that will help. Don’t despair. As long as the school’s engg majors are ABET accredited and the school has a couple of those majors you’re probably going to find somewhere to go to school next year. The ECs are going to matter much less at most flagships.

Once you get your list from Supermatch look at the costs of each school and ask your parents how much you can afford.

I tried Supermatch but it didn’t really give me very many results. I only punched in my desired majors and scores.

That may be because you put in all three engineering programs. Just out of curiosity, how many schools did SuperMatch select that had all three programs?

There are 8 or so ABET-accredited naval and marine engg programs. Only the US Naval Academy has aerospace and mechanical engg as well.

You might have to make a decision about what direction to go in. Aerospace will give you more school options than than naval.

Ok, I think I am leaning towards mech so I only put that in. Some that come up are: Alfred, Auburn, Baylor, Drexel, FL State, Fairfield, Howard, Winona State, University of New Haven, U of North Texas, IUPUI, Michigan State, Mississippi State, etc. Auburn stands out the most to me, but I don’t think I have good chances for it.

Another thing I’ve been wondering about is whether mentioning my ethnicity will hurt or help me. I was born and raised here in California, but my parents immigrated from Sri Lanka and we are Tamils.

@Mentorsattic, see post #5. there is only one school that has all the ABET-accredited programs OP is interested in. With just mechanical engg, he has scores of schools.
