I’m looking for any schools that offer Armenia and Armenian culture or language focused courses. U Mich is the only one that appears to have a major/minor program, but there may be more in Near East programs that I’m just missing. Thanks for any insight!
Fresno State.
There’s a substantial Armenian community in Southern California, so you may want to look for Armenian Studies at LA area colleges.
Erevan State University…
Armenian isn’t searchable in College Navigator, so I expect it also isn’t searchable in the other college-matching search engines. Google pulls up these links for “Armenian language major” and “Armenian studies”:
Cal State Northridge https://catalog.csun.edu/academics/mcll/programs/ba-languages-and-cultures-i/armenian/
UC LA http://nelc.ucla.edu/armenian/
U Mich https://lsa.umich.edu/neareast/languages/languages/armenian.html
UC Berkeley http://guide.berkeley.edu/courses/armeni/
Los Angeles City College https://www.lacitycollege.edu/Academic-Departments/Foreign-Languages-Humanities/Programs/Armenian
Fresno State http://fresnostate.edu/catalog/subjects/armenian-studies/armenia-mn.html
Columbia University http://www.columbia.edu/cu/mesaas/languages/armenian/
UC Irvine http://www.humanities.uci.edu/armenianstudies/
Unfortunately, all but one of those are in CA, and there isn’t much financial aid at all for OOS students in CA. You would need to expect to be full-pay.
You should be able to find out about other programs by contacting:
Society for Armenian Studies https://societyforarmenianstudies.com/
National Association for Armenian Studies and Research https://naasr.org/
These organizations should be able to point you to the Near East programs that offer Armenian.
Armenian Virtual College has online language instruction, but does not appear to be a degree-granting institution https://www.avc-agbu.org/en/academics/departments.html
Good luck with your search!
U. Chicago has a program on Armenian language and culture.
No matter where you decide to attend, make sure to check out the Boren language awards: https://www.borenawards.org/. Armenian is considered a critical language by the U.S. government, so there’s some money available for studying abroad in Armenia and getting language immersion there.
Some colleges I know of that offer Armenian language classes: Columbia U, U Chicago, UCLA, U Michigan, Harvard, Rutgers New Brunswick. I’d check Middlebury as well, as they offer a lot.
