I recently received my score report for the March SAT with writing, and I got a 1430 Composite (740 CR&W, 690 Math). I didn’t study for it, because I wanted to focus my time and energy on studying for the ACT, which kids in my region tend to do better on based on the curriculum we’re taught. However, after receiving this score, I’m thinking about studying for the math section and taking it again. The schools I’m looking at are pretty competitive (UPenn, UVA, Georgetown, William & Mary), so with my current SAT score, am I a viable applicant? I know admissions are based on more than just test scores, but if you could give any examples of schools that I’m on-level with, that would be great!

By standardized scoring in isolation, you seem to be typical for excellent colleges such as Middlebury, for example.
I think the average for accepted students this year was 1420 at W&M and 1400 at UVA. I don’t think I’ve seen Penn or Georgetown averages. Penn will certainly be higher and Georgetown likely as well.
Are you in state or our of state for UVA and W&M? The numbers above would be overall and out of state is likely higher. Both UVA and W&M are going to also look closely at your grades and classwork.
Sorry, 1400 was last year for UVA. Class of 2021 admits have an average of 1419 and W&M 2021 admits have an average of 1420 according to news releases.
I’m out of state from Texas
Sorry to bring the bad news, for OOS, all the schools on your list are “reaches” UNLESS you have a “hook”. Hook is something like - low-income URM, first gen college, winning something at the National level (sports, academics). Without these hooks, the odds are low for a general candidate with an ok SAT score around 1400. Try to investigate the top 30-50 schools, and see if there are any that may interest you. The past college admission season is brutal to many applicants. Schools traditionally I deem safe for kids with an SAT average around 1400 are no longer the case. The stats could get materially worse next year as many GCs are spooked by the competitions saw this year. JMHO.

No. That’s the new SAT and it’s below an ACT 32. Try to get your SAT to be at or preferably ABOVE an ACT 33 for better chances at these schools… At a school like UPenn, an ACT 33 is probably average.
Unless you are a hooked applicant, a 34-36 is likely needed to gain admission to UPenn and Georgetown, and even then a 34 would likely require some remarkable EC’s.
So I agree with the others that you need to raise scores for all since you are out of state for UVA and W&M. 1430 is pretty good for SAT without studying. I am not sure how much of ACT prep carries over for SAT. You need to understand the strategies and approaches. If you do really well on ACT, you are probably fine. If not, SAT prep might be worthwhile.
How did you get your score report? I thought results weren’t out yet?
