Schools...

Well this is my list…
Im a current Junior in a Atlanta public school.
African American
GPA: Should be a 3.4 by the end of the first semester.
SAT: 1808 I beleive
EC’s: DECA,FBLA (Officer next year),French Club, Chess Club, Part time job (20 hours a week), Volunteered at a hospital, Indoor soccer team (Outside of school…probably does not matter)
My GPA for junior year will be a 3.9 (Grades got better after freshman year!)
Essays should be excellent aswell as Rec’s.

Reach:
Emory
NYU

Match:
Ga Tech
Oxford at Emory
BU CGS
UC Davis

Well this is what I researched so far…What schools should I change around for the reach and matches…

Eh anyone?

I tend to agree with your breakdown of reaches and matches. Think about retaking your SAT…NYU is known to be fairly number conscious, and a higher SAT score never hurts admission anywhere!!

Are you first generation college? That would help a lot.

Otherwise your numbers are somewhat low, but being African American, and from Atlanta Public Schools should help you. The ‘rising trend’ is a positive.

Yes actually I am…parents never went to college (losers! =P)

Work on your GPA and scores as much as you can, and I think you will be successful in your college search then.

Im really interested in NYU…How high of a reach is that?

I am not sure, will you need financial aid? NYU’s financial aid usually sucks…

Maybe…It really depends, But statwise, How is it?

If you get straight As for the rest of high school and get either a 29 or above on ACT or 2100 or above on SAT you might be pretty close to a sure bet…

Im sure I can get the Straight A’s till the rest of the year, I am also going to be doing Dual Enrollment next year! But yea…the 2100 on the SAT is little bit of a stretch…It would not hurt to try…I still have 2 more trys…one in may and the other in November.

Make sure you try the ACT as well. Some people just do better on it.

I certainly did better on the ACT.

But that may have been because I forgot my ID for the SAT so I was stressing, and the ACT was at my HS, so it was comfortable. Plus, when I was waiting I was talking to a person retaking the SAT because they were disappointed with a 2300. Kind of intimidating.

SAT - 1370 (2000) - 1st try
ACT - 34 - same(should get MME results next month, and this score could go up)

Im really not sure what type of science is on the ACT…I gotta study that I guess.

ummm…u can’t get an 1808 on the SAT. And btw, how do u not know wat u got? When did u get the results, a month or 2 ago?

Last month…I have the envelope laying around some where.

Wait am I mistaken about first generation? If my brother went to college, would I still be considered first generation?

Because hes currently still in college

nope he is first generation… not you…sorry

I think he is still first generation. His parents did not go to college. He and his brother would both be first generation.
