Schreyer Class of 2030

Good luck to everyone today! I wanted to create a thread for parents/students to be able to connect as things move forward!

Thank you. Youngest son accepted to Schreyer. His brother is a sophomore at PSU and in Schreyer, and he was headed to Univ. of Colorado if he didn’t get in. Hopeful this will tip the scales back to being a Nittany Lion.

 Our daughter got in as well. Her brother is a junior at PSU and did Schreyer freshman and sophomore year. She’s deciding between Purdue and PSU for MechE. WE ARE hoping she’ll choose PSU, but time will tell!

Good luck, everyone! Getting in to Schreyer was the most exciting decision (to me) for my son last year - still took him till mid-April to commit. Good luck and congratulations! There is also a Schreyer Parents group on FB.

Can you share your thoughts about Schreyer? My son was accepted and is struggling to decide between Schreyer and 1 other school.

What specifically do you want to know? I can say that my older son, who is a sophomore, has already had an internship with the City of Austin and is studying abroad in South America this semester. He received financial assistance from Schreyer for both and has been very happy with their overall support.

Thank you for responding! I am just trying to get a sense for how beneficial being in Schreyer is and thoughts on the opportunities Schreyer students have (both academically and socially). My son is really struggling to decide between Schreyer and a private university.

What university? (if you’d like to share) - I really can’t see a downside to Schreyer (except maybe the thesis senior year?) - What would you like to know?

Academically - he definitely has some smaller classes and is with similarly minded students. Socially - there are a lot of Schreyer specific special events - and events with the Dean and other cool things (and even a parent book club with the Dean). I don’t think mu son has taken too much advantage of Schreyer social things - but he is busy on campus.

The best for him is being in the big school / big sports environment that he wanted - but also the smaller classes / community and (I’ll admit it for him - prestige) of being in Schreyer.

It’s extremely beneficial especially for freshmen and sophomores: excellent, confortable dorms that are well-located and have an excellent associate dining hall; a personal adviser (vs. Meeting with s.o who doesn’t know you twice a year); smaller, interactive classes, often with the best professors on campus, either unique to Schreyer or special sections; easier access to research as soon as freshman year; special social opportunities to network - all that high class adult socializing experience that can come in handy when you land your junior internship.
Students can quit after the first year or two especially if they’re not interested in research, although that can also be a plus for their resume (they can work on a project that speaks to their career interests, from biotechnology to marketing).
Finally, the fact it’s in the top 5 of all honors colleges in the country can add a bit of prestige in careers where that matters - there are 9,000 freshmen and only 300 are in Schreyer. It’s a big deal.
I really can’t see a downside. If admitted, try it for a year, at worst you can quit after freshman year.

Daughter will be following in the footsteps of her older brother who graduated from PSU and Schreyer in 2025. I can’t say enough wonderful things about it. My son’s research was interesting to him and he was able to publish it. Being in Schreyer got him noticed among a large pool of applicants, helping him land his sophomore year paid summer internship. He was with the same company for his junior year internship with a job offer in hand before his senior year even began. He is now working for that large multi-national company and traveling the world at 23. While I don’t think it was all because of Schreyer, it definitely made a difference as his friends without that experience definitely struggled more to stand out.
