Schreyer Honors College Thesis Topic

I am currently a student at a PA community college. When I apply for transfer admission to Penn State, I will also fill out the application for Schreyer Honors College. Not only do I have the GPA required for Schreyer, but I have also taken honors courses at my community college (with the last honors course that I will take in the fall, I will graduate with honors). I am planning on majoring in Biochemistry at Penn State.

I am aware that I will have to write a thesis in order to graduate with honors from Penn State. So far, I absolutely know what I want my topic to be about; however, it has absolutely nothing to do with the field of biochemistry. The topic I am planning on doing my thesis on (assuming I get accepted to Schreyer, let alone Penn State) involves the past, present, and future of rail travel in the Philadelphia area.

So my question is, assuming that I get accepted into Schreyer, will I be able to write my thesis on a topic not directly related to my field of study? I am passionate about this topic; as a railfan who has lived his entire life in the Philly area, this is a topic that I want to write about.

yes you can. However, while your degree will be in BMB, your honors designation will be in another department that is relevant to your topic. May be history. You would have an honors advisor in both departments, but your thesis will be evaluated by the history dept

@luvthej Thank you! Your response helped on so many levels! I can’t wait to become a Nittany Lion in 2015!
