Thank you. I think I actually did not end up submitting my application. I think I was just to burned out and figured it was to much of a long shot!
My son was accepted to Schreyerâs Honors college. We are so excited for him. He hasnât committed yet as waiting on a few other college decisions, but this definitely puts PSU towards the top of his list.
Portal in Schreyer pages. Noted that a postal letter will be forthcoming.
I think all the applicants did! Those were no joke. But congrats!
I know that a lot of high-achieving students donât even apply to Schreyer because they donât want to write all the essays, so all those who committed to this application process really do deserve big kudos. My son had the advantage and special torture of a parent who is both an English professor and the director of a much smaller honors college. We require one essay of 500 words, and every year I read about 300 applications, so Iâve gotten a sense for what does and doesnât resonate with our particular committee. The Schreyer prompts really demand a lot, and it is humbling seeing it all from this side of the application process. I couldnât tell you how many drafts my son wrote for those two long essays, but he kept at it without getting (too) frustrated with my feedback, and thatâs how I knew he truly wanted to join the honors college for him and not because I value that kind of community. After he submitted, I reminded him that there are always factors beyond his control, so Iâm just relieved the decision went in his favor, especially after he refused my advice about doing the optional interview. (He was so burned out on college applications by then, but I worried it wasnât all that optional.) Now I am hoping he commits to Penn State!
And to echo what someone else said, Penn State has ALL the opportunities, honors college or not. The biggest advantage in our view is that Schreyer offers an immediate community at a really huge school. When I asked my son how he would feel if he didnât get into Schreyer, he said heâd be disappointed but that heâd take advantage of everything else PSU has to offer.
I was waitlisted at SHC. I canât seem to find much admissions data online, so I am wondering if everyone who doesnât get in receives a waitlist position or if it still means I have a real chance.
there are many people who were denied and did not receive a waitlist offer.
yes, you have a chance!
I know kids who got off the waitlist in the past few years - and some as early as late April - even before the May 1st deadline.
donât despair!
The Schreyer acceptance message mentioned that we should be receiving important information related to our acceptance in the mail in the next few days. Itâs now been a few weeks and I havenât received anything. Has anyone gotten anything in the mail?
We just got an envelope on Saturday, and weâre pretty close distance-wise to PSU, so be on the lookout. Invite to Schreyer reception on accepted student days. Cute little swag too.
Literally just received it this afternoon. Thanks! Like the little banner they gave us
@Neha_Sharma3 advice is no different than any other essay advice.
- be yourself. Let your personality shine through.
- be thoughtful.
Essays will be read by 2 professors who are trained and read Schreyer essays every year. Essays may also be read by one or more admission staff depending on how consistent or compelling the professors comments are (or are not!).
At this point, you are 10 days away. My best advice is to get something on paper. Put it away for 24 hours and re-read. Edit. Let it sit. Then ask a trusted person to edit for spelling, grammar, etc. But make sure they have enough time since they are also busy. Make those edits. put away for 24 hours again. One final re-read and submit.
Anyone hearing from Schreyer for fall 2025 yet?
Decisions will not be announced until early March. They release them at one time in a big batch. SHC will send out an email in January/February with that date.
Thanks!!! We will be on the lookout!!! If anyone finds the date/time when SHC will be announced do pass along!! (S25 high school email often goes to spam or quarantined because of firewall).
Just got the email that SHC decisions will be released February 28, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Little strange. I (Parent) got the email and not my son.
Yeah, same here. That is strange!
Weird that it came to us parents! My memory doesnât serve if thatâs how it worked in the past⊠but I feel all colleges should reply to the student high school email & a backup email because last time we were left with tons of quarantined high school emails!!!
Decisions are posted - my senior just found out he got in!
My kid doesnât have a decision yet. It still shows the application as complete but no status. Anyone else?
