I recently got a rec letter from a science camp I was at last summer and they offered to send it to any colleges for me. I was wondering if I should do it (just as an extra rec letter)?

Brief argument outline:

send:
90% good things about me
information on the science camp I was at

not send:
10% bad things about me
its way past the postmark date
its excess information (already have 2 teacher and 1 counsel recs sent)

If it is not well known and is not selective, then the letter won’t help. The camp would be viewed as an EC that doesn’t differentiate you from other candidates.

And it depends on what you accomplished in the camp …

If you came up with a new idea, one which you pursued with passion after the camp, then the letter would make that clear. It would help make you stand out from other candidates.

If however you simply took courses, did labs and exercises and you increased your understanding in some area of science, then I doubt that the letter would help. And the 10% of the letter that is less than stellar could hurt.

Its not well known. I didn’t do anything extremely exceptional. However, I did genuinely exhibit passion and overall excellence and I feel like the letter does a good job of expressing that.

But you’re right. Its not something that shows anything outstanding so it would be sort of bad to send it in as an additional piece of information.
