I have been brainstorming for a while of what my essay should be about and think that I should write about how I won the science fair in 5th grade. I wanted to know if I should go ahead and write about this. I would like to have a good essay as I feel like it will be the thing that will put me over the top of the hump.

Eh, did it actually impact you in any substantial way? If not, then just scratch the idea. Writing about winning a science fair, not to mention only being in the fifth grade, seems superficial unless it has changed you in some way, which I doubt it did. Nevertheless, if you really feel passionate about this, then write it then get your teachers to read over them (I got 3 of my teachers reading my common app essay right now, lol).
It’s going to be hard for adcoms to read much into an essay about 5th grade, 6+ years ago. Pick something more recent, that shows you today.
