Science for life? Anyone know what's it about?

Hi everyone. My kid tried to find information about the class Science for Life on the website but it wasn’t very helpful. Did any one take the class? Is is worth it? What is actually covered? Thank you.

Is this supposed to be an easy Gen-Ed?

I took Science for Life a few semesters ago. Some of my friends didn’t mind it but I honestly thought it was the most boring waste of time. If your child wants to get involved in research, especially chemistry-related, than it may help them gather some contacts but probably not much more. If it is the same set-up then each week two or three speakers come in and show the students a powerpoint about their research and give their emails for contacts. It is an easy credit but not necessary. I think it would be a lot easier to search specifically for professors involved in the research your child is interested in and contact them personally rather than take a useless credit.

Pretty much every Honors student who is pre-med takes the course (because the advisers suggest you to add it to your schedule at preview). I took it in my first semester at UF and it was pretty dull. The goal of the class is to provide students with research opportunities so they have professors come in every class lecture and speak about their research project. Then if a student is interested in their project, they can contact the professor. That’s what science for life is ideally created for. However, many students (including myself) think it’s simpler to just find research on our own (not through the class). I personally didn’t think it was worth it but hey, it’s only 1 credit. You do have to write three papers which are graded but the class is an easy A. And Science for Life doesn’t count as an honors class either, fyi.

Thank you guys for the info I do appreciate it!
