Sciences at Maryland?

UMD is my third-choice school (behind cal and reed, two very-probable rejections) and i was wondering how good, exactly, are UMD’s physics and biochem programs? i know their aero-engineering program is very good, but outside of that i don’t really know how well my other top-choices for a major are. do physics/biochem grads get accepted to top-notch grad schools (mit, cal, harvard, stanford and the like)? will i get a good amount of research experience?

Yes, you can get a lot of research experience. I know a bio major who’s been in a lab since second semester freshman year, and a biochem major who’s been working in a lab for the past two years. The biochem major has been accepted to Stanford, CalTech, and Berkeley chemical biology PhD programs (she chose Stanford). Physics at Maryland is also very good.

How do people get involved with research at UMCP? I want to do biochem or molbio research, but how do you actually end up finding yourself doing a project and in a lab?

DS has been given opportunities as a B/K recipient and by getting to know his science professors. You can also sign up to receive emails about research opportunities on and off campus.
