scientists' abilities

I have seen my fair shares of postdoc/research scientist who has very poor lab skills so much so that I wonder how did they ever got their PhD…and also graduate students who managed to publish in high-impact journals before they graduate.

I wonder what factors lies beneath it? Talent? Advisor? Luck? Hardwork?

I have friends that wouldn’t know a beaker from a Bunsen burner, but they all do theoretical and/or computational work, so there’s no need for them to learn their way around a lab.

Publishing in a high impact journal is a bit of everything you mentioned.
