Could a 5 on my AP Chem exam atone for a slightly lower 720 on the chem sat ii? It seems like everybody on CC who posts their chem sat ii gets a 780+.

… doubt it. 5’s are more common and easy to get than 780+

@op: not really. but 720 is decent enough just not great. subject tests arent required as it is, so it will probably not be a big factor anyway

Even though Stanford strongly recommends the subject tests, given the 7-8% acceptance rate and overall competitiveness of the applicant pool, wouldn’t you be at a severe disadvantage if you didn’t take any sat iis?

^^yes, unless you’re a recruited athlete or your last name is Stanford.

@avid: i disagree
i met several people who got in (class of '14) without Subject Tests who were not recruited athletes, urms, or anything else amazing. just good students who chose not to send subject test scores

i think it is a disadvantage because they may see it as 1. you did not take the risk of taking them or 2. you did not score as well as you wanted to, but i wouldn’t say its a severe disadvantage

certainly it would help if you did well and sent your scores, though…

i had a 680 on my chem sat II (5 on the AP, which I just got back today) and got in (though I also had 800s on math II, Latin, and USH). So, It shouldn’t kill you

My SAT IIs are these:
Math 2-800
Chem-720
USH-710

yeah, I don’t really see those as being something to be atoned for. They are all respectable scores and the math is good. I wouldn’t rely on those to give you a big boost, but I don’t think Sat IIs really give anyone that big a boost. But You definitely don’t need to atone for them/
