Here’s the prompt,

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

People are often criticized for working out their own ideas before learning all that others have discovered about a problem or subject. But those people are right; it is possible to know too much, especially at first. The time for thorough inquiry and extensive research is later, after you have made your own discoveries and come to your own conclusions.

Assignment:

Is it better for people to work out their own ideas on a problem or issue before learning how others have approached it? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

MY ESSAY:

It is much better to work out our own ideas on a problem before we learn how others have approached it. The reason is simple; when we learn how a person has solved a problem, we will have lost our creativity. When we learn the solution, we will solve the problem just like how the other person solved it, thus ruining our chances to think for ourselves, and think of creative ways of approaching the problem.

In schools, when students try to extend their problem-solving capabilities, they will often turn to exercise books with hundreds of problems for them to solve. When they try to solve the problems, their brains work actively and their eyes remain focused on the problem, as if they are trying to drill a hole into the book with their eyes. But when they get stuck on a problem, they work even harder, sweating, twisting. Here the problem arises. Educators and children’s parents will quickly tell the children to "peek’ at the solution without looking at the method of solving. This is all to relieve the frustration of the students. The educators hope that by “peeking” at the answer, the students will receive some sort of hint and solve the problem. But the teachers fail to realize that human nature is not so simple. When the students look at the solution, they will, because of their frustration, be tempted to look further; they will learn how to solve the problem. When that happens, the creativity is lost; the student will have lost the ability to withstand the frustration and the drive to work harder by trying every single way they can think of to solve the problem will have gone.

In my school, the teachers always say to frustrated students, “Look at the answer; it will help you”. Because the students think the teacher knows best, they will look at the answer, and inevitably, the method when the teacher is facing away. They will quickly copy the answers onto the paper and hand it in to the teacher. The teacher, having failed to see the consequences of his advice, pats the student on the back. This is why cheating is so prevalent today; when the students take a test with no solutions, they must at least try to copy valuable information such as solutions to difficult problems on paper and look at it while the teacher is faced away.

Thus, it is best to solve a problem ourselves before learning how others have solved it.
