Do you think a 2160 is too low for Rice especially since i am from houston?

I plan on re-taking in october

That’s a perfectly acceptable score. By no means does it make you a shoo-in, but I don’t think it will hold you back, either.

Hi Magerie - Rice definitely looks at each applicant holistically and doesn’t really have a ‘formula’ that looks at one number or another. That bit of good news being said, it is tougher to get in if you are from Houston. My d, from Houston, is a NMF, SAT scores 2250, had national awards and was waitlisted. Fortunately she was accepted at several other top choices and is happily packing the U-Haul for North Carolina as I type.

My advice would be to take the SATs again, it may help. But more importantly work on a creative essay and resume that tells Rice what is unique or unusual about yourself. Imho, Rice takes great pride in selecting those unique candidates.

Go ahead and retake if you like, but as ldmom said, your primary focus should be on the non-standardized, non-statistical parts of the application. In an area like Houston – nay, the State of Texas – there will always be someone with higher scores. Big deal.

Show them who you are, and reveal your passions. Be more than a student and more than a set of numbers on the page. As for your scores themselves, you already have me beat in math/verbal, and now I’m an alumnus – you could be, too.
