Scottish History

Does anyone know if there are Scottish History graduate programs in the US? I know St. Andrews, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen have good programs, but I’m a bit hesitant to spend years in the UK (I did a semester in the fall). Are UK graduate degrees held in the same esteem as US degrees? Also, do graduates in history programs typically apply to a general history program then focus on a specific topic later on, or does one pick a specific area/time from the get-go? Is one option more valuable than the other in terms of getting teaching positions at the university level? Thanks!

Don’t forget Glasgow. Your American options are rather limited; Harvard is the only university I can think of with such a program (Celtic Studies), although I think Berkeley has limited offerings in that area. In Canada, U Toronto has a fairly good program. Medieval Studies departments might be a place to check for faculty with expertise in Scottish history. You might also try reading books in your area of interest and see where they currently teach (or if they don’t teach, where they got their PhD).

Berkeley might be a place to consider. Read this.
