Does anyone have suggestions for reputable screenwriting competitions open to college students? I’ve seen a few websites collecting them, and there are many of them, but a lot of them seem like they might be entrance-fee collection schemes.

I don’t think there are any reputable contests just for college students, if that’s what you’re looking for. I don’t think you’d want them anyways - it’s better to just jump into the deep end and enter actual, well-known contests.

A vast majority of the “best” screenwriting competitions - such as the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, Final Drafts big break, Blue Cat, and the infamous Nicholl Fellowship (the granddaddy of them all) - are open to anyone over the age of 18, regardless of whether or not you’re in college. So long as you’re above 18 and submit an accurate entry that follows all guidelines, you’re good.

Some newer contests, like TrackingB, Page, and Script Pipeline, are also worth checking out. I hear they’re nice gems. If you do a few web searches, you’ll find more. Most contests worth entering do have an entry fee between $40-$90 (depending on early or late deadline fee’s), so you can’t expect to spend nothing.

^___ agree with Abcde11 above. Reputable competitions do have entry fees. If you have not yet found withoutabox, you are missing out on a fantastic gateway to competitions.
