Screwed my life?

I got a 800 in Physics, 800 in Math II but only a 740 in Chem (I know my score in Chem is not good at all). Plus, I’m international. What should I do? Retake Chem? I mean, colleges only consider 2 SAT Subject tests, right? But then, I have sent all my scores to them already. I am applying to MIT, Stanford, Caltech and the Ivies.

Plus, does anyone know what the average SAT subject test scores are at Caltech?

Thanks a lot!

This thread and the title is pathetic.

You’re right, Vegan Lox. Indian 2011 will need at least 850s to be considered

The title of this post isn’t as disturbing as the fact that you are an international student only applying to highly selective schools. Not the smartest idea…

Yeah Indian2011, I’ve heard that you need a 1000 and a 7.5 unweighted GPA to even apply to the sacred pieces of ground known as Ivies.

On the more serious side, I believe some schools like MIT recommend you to take a humanities subject test (although I might be wrong).

Edit: forget what I said, lol.

No, MIT requires you to take one math and one science; there is nothing on the site that indicates a humanities test will give you a competitive edge. Though, intuitively, I’d think that a technical institute would want kids who, in addition to being math and science nerds, have some verbal recall.

Though I would presume that a 750-800 CR demonstrates verbal skills. I would think that MIT does get a lot of kids with 800 M and 800 Chem, but I don’t think something 800 M and 720 USH would look better. And math is the universal language for scientists XP.

is a 740 really a bad subject test score for top schools?

I agree with OP completely. His life is completely over.

I can’t even tell if this guy is being serious

You better learn how to work a spatula and a soft drink dispenser. Off to McDonalds for you.

Game over. You lose.

Hey Indian2011,

I don’t think your life is screwed. You can retake the Chem. 740 is not bad but not good either. Maybe 750 and above is decent. You should read the SilverTurtle’s guide in this CC board. It’s one think to be down about the Chem 740 but thinking your life is screwed ? No. Be +ve.

Stolen from the SilverTurtle guide:

Consider this College Confidential post from MIT admissions officer Chris Peterson:
Quote:
There is no difference, for our process, between someone with a 750 and an 800 on the Math SAT II. Literally no difference. Once your standardized scores are sufficient to predict success at MIT - to show that you are academically qualified for MIT - they have reached the limit of usefulness, and we move on to other things.

Forget caltech mit or stanford you better go to community college.

Jk…

OP:
Well considering that you’re an international and from India of all places, you’re going to have a REALLY tough time getting in. And if you’re freaking out about a measly sat subject test score you should reconsider whether you’d actually like to go to top schools with tremendous academic workload and be able to thrive in such an environment.

Also I’d vouch that the quote from MIT applies a good amount to domestic applicants, especially hooked ones (URM, recruited athlete, etc.), but not so much to internationals. They receive zillions of applications worldwide, especially from India, and accept only a tiny portion. Sure, I doubt they’d say “oh this person doesn’t have all perfects, send him the rejection” but things sure are competitive.

Unless you have a family that has given over a hundred million in donations to the school, received at least 3 Nobel Prizes, the Pulitzer prize, taken 29 AP tests (all fives of course), and been the CEO of a fortune 500 company, you’d be lucky to get into community college. Because being in the 99th percentile of students isnt good enough, and instead of spending your time on CC you should probably start looking to buy a cardboard box to live in while you still can.

Yeah dude, I don’t know what you should do. Maybe, ummm, apply only to really low level schools because, you know, if you don’t get perfect test scores you won’t succeed in life.
