Screwed? ...Really confused.

Hello, I am new to the site and just made an account like 5 minutes ago so I apologize if this is the sort of thing that’s posted a lot or if it’s on the wrong topic page.

It’s 3:30 in the morning and I can’t sleep because I’m at a loss for what I’m going to do with my life - I’m scheduled to enroll at the University of Oklahoma on June 18th and I have no idea what to enroll into… Or if it’s even all that important at the time.

I’m extremely confused as to what I want to major in, and I’m having troubles figuring out what majors lead to what careers. By that, I mean, well…here are some things I’ve always been interested in:

I was Student Council Vice President my junior year, Junior Class President, NHS Secretary Junior year, in a Youth Leadership Exchange program for selective youth among the OKC area, and many other things that year. In addition, my senior year I was Student Council President, Senior class vice, NHS vice, yearbook editor, etc. etc. etc.

oh, i also graduated as salutatorian, just thought i’d throw that in. :]

Needless to say, I’m a people person. I enjoy leadership and representing people. I’ve always considered public relations as a nice major, but I’m not sure what that entails, or where that would lead me. 9-5 daily job sitting in an office or…? realistically what would that mean? (i got into gaylord college at ou - journalism)

this past year i took an ap government class and i also found out that i really enjoy government and politics, and suddenly i decided heck, i should be a lawyer and then a politician. dumb move? i am actually, genuinely interested in being a lawyer for more than what i just stated. quite frankly, i’m too tired to go into it, but is the hassle and years of work really all that worth it or am i more than likely going to go to college for a million years, pray that i pass the lsat and bar, and then live in debt for the first year of my career or…?
should i just stick to politics? political science? what kind of class would i enroll in?

what would having a major in business or marketing be like?

i guess my largest dilemma is going through college with a degree and not knowing where it’s going to take me.

is it too distracting to take other classes such as photography meanwhile? i’m also worried that i’ll become too involved in my more “fun” classes and focus less of the studies that i should be focusing on.

Again, I apologize for sounding like the terrified freshman noob but I didn’t know where else to go for input.

Thanks in advance for ANY feedback! :D

Kayla

Wait, I need to sort this out: did you get into COLLEGE or PREP SCHOOL? This is the prep school admissions board. You should try posting on the college discussion board.

But I’ll give you some advice. I’m not even an HS freshman yet! :)

Hm… if you enjoy both law and public relations, I’d choose the one that you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life and actually enjoying. Also, check out the salaries. Could you do both - i.e. PR after law? Because you just started liking gov./politics this year, I wouldn’t consider it as much as PR. The thing that you’re most capable of doing and would have the most fun with is the one you should choose.

olivia is correct – you will get much better advice if you post on the parent’s forum. Look at the column to the top left of the page and click on Parent’s and post your question there.

Your fears are pretty standard for entering college students – so don’t worry about it.

One thing I noticed about your post – you are worried about getting too involved in your “fun” classes and not doing well in your other classes. Those classes that you enjoy and have “fun” in will actually point you in the right direction for your career. If you think you want a career in journalism but you find all the classes a drag and don’t enjoy any of the journalism clubs, activities and internships – you don’t want to be a journalist.

Definitely try some new stuff in college and always take a “fun” class. You will find that the closer you get to Senior year, the more you enjoy your classes and those area that are “fun” will most likely end up your major.

oh wow
you see, this is exactly how tired i was.

i read prep school at a glance
and thought
oh! preparing for school! and it was in the pre-college area. wowwww.
lmao. my bad

just college
but
i’m not a parent?

You can still ask parents for advice.

I suggested asking your question on the parents board because I think the advice you will get there will be much better than advice from other high school kids.

Is a 17 or 18 year old expected to know what to do with the rest of her life? If Kayla went to Harvard she would be expected to educate herself, try her wings in a number of areas and then choose in 3rd year. If that approach is good enough for Harvard it is probably good enough for Oklahoma. Do liberal arts, give yourself the gift of an education.
