SCS Submit just ACT?

So i did a lot better on my ACT(33) than I did on my SAT(1990).
would it hurt my chances of getting into SCS if only submitted my ACT Scores?

When a school says ACT accepted (hard to find one that doesn’t take the ACT) you do not have to submit the SAT and there is no adverse impact on your file.
Many students from midwest don’t even take the SAT.

Even if you don’t send the SAT-- since you self-report the score on the Common AP-- they will see it and download to your file. Your high school likely sends it as well.

For what it’s worth, neither my S or D even took the SAT. S took ACT once and D took ACT twice.

Do make sure you took the SATIIs in the correct subject areas as specified in application instructions. Humanities SATIIs are of no interest to SCS or CIT.

CMU superscores-- so the ACT 33 will get picked up.

Once you apply, you’ll see all the scores noted on your “where am i in the process” login page which you access with a code provided by mail with the application received confirmation note.

Best of Luck!

Very Helpful, Thank you.

Do you think a 33 ACT would offset low SAT Subject scores?

There is no such thing as “offset” in college admissions at CMU or anywhere.

Admissions is holistic with each college weighting some items more than others-- with gpa/course selection being first on nearly every list – and weights of remaining items (test scores, recs, ECs, etc.) vary accordingly.

Offset might be a wishful concept – but each component really needs to cross a threshold.
Even perfect ACTs would not offset 500s on Subject tests.

Speaking about MCS, CIT and SCS…You should worry if subject tests are below 650 – especially if there’s a major inconsistency relative to earning an A in the class. A combo of this type raises a red flag of grade inflation – get an A in math and you pull a 600-- something is wrong.

Take the test again if in doubt…you have two more shots…

If you are going into SCS I would not count on good ACT scores off-setting so-so SAT subject test scores. While I am sure there are exceptions, I suspect most students in SCS will have math and science subjects tests over 700 and definitely over 650.

I used 650 as the 25th percentile-- lowest possible score.
Agree with Mathmom.
SCS --and would argue that 750 is your safe place
700+ a minimum

mom2012and 2014, you said “Once you apply, you’ll see all the scores noted on your “where am i in the process” login page which you access with a code provided by mail with the application received confirmation note.”

Did they actually “convert” the individual subjects on the ACT scores to some SAT equivalent? Like ACT English score to an SAT CR score or just leave the 33 or whatever? Or was it just the Composite?

And thanks for the info on the SAT IIs, very helpful, but I doubt my D will retake.

They didn’t do a conversion-- ACT is its own respectable test and they just look at those scores as is.

On the WhereAmI page, only display the Math, English and Composite were displayed…they did not show all 5 scores. Seems like Science and reading didn’t seem to matter to them as individual scores.

Half of the US still only takes the ACT – there’s no bias against it in favor of the the SAT.

You do need the SAT subject tests specified by whatever college you are applying to at CMU.

Good luck
