SDI and Work Study -- Please Help

Hi. I am a junior at a private university in California. I’m trying to find out about working through work-study while on SDI. A few months ago, I was injured in a car accident by an intoxicated driver. Prior to that, I was working full-time at a good retail job with health insurance. I am still injured, but I feel I could work some other job or at my work with some restrictions. My employer, however, is concerned that I will injure myself further at work, so I am not allowed to return until I am healed. Before all of this happened, I was granted $3500 in work study. Now, I am on SDI, but I am making half the amount of my would-be wages.

I have been offered an on-campus job that would work with my injuries. Since I was granted work study based off my full-time wages, my thoughts are that work-study would not have to be reported as income to SDI. However, no one at the SDI office or at my school’s offices has an answer for me. Does anyone know if I will have my SDI benefits reduced because of work study? If so, is it a dollar-per-dollar reduction? Thanks.

Does the second Q & A help?

Sorry to hear about your accident.

BTW…can’t you sue the driver for any lost wages??? I think you can if they won’t willingly pay. What is your insurance saying? I was hit by a driver and his insurance paid for all of my lost wages…I didn’t have to sue…I just had to show the loss.

You may need to talk to the appropriate lawyer for this if not resolved easily.

I dont’ think you were granted WS based on your full time wages. You were granted that amount based on need.
