SDSU Class of 2024 Application Thread

@Gumbymom My S has 3.63 CSU GPA and 1450 SAT; EI: 4350. He is applying as pre-speech, language and hearing sciences of SDSU. Do you know the EI for this major?

@xiaobaomama2020: SDSU does not list EI by major. The campus overall EI for admitted students 2019 was 4459. I would say your son is within range but no guarantees since he will be ranked with all the other pre-speech, language and hearing science majors.
Last year the acceptance rate for his major was around 50% so not bad odds. 351 applicants with 179 admits.

Thank you @Gumbymom Just have to hope for the best!

Does anyone in this forum have kids going to SDSU? How do people like the school? We are from NorCal, never heard about this college before, but really like it when we visited SDSU several months ago.

@xiaobamomam2020:

My younger son graduated from SDSU last year as a CS major. Loved his time there and found plenty of activities to keep him busy. Liked the convenience of the San Diego Trolley as a Freshman without a car, to get around town. He found the student population diverse and friendly. He had 2 roommates Freshman and Sophomore year from Nor Cal and continues to be in contact with them post grad. Overall he found the academics challenging and had many good professors especially in his upper division courses. He had little difficulty in getting his classes, made great outside contacts for internships and jobs through his fraternity and current lives and works in the San Diego area.

My niece is currently a 2nd year student at SDSU. Although not her top choice in schools originally, she is very glad with her decision. She likes that the beaches, shopping and many different entertainment activities are nearby including concerts and sports events at the Viejas arena on campus. Also has found the academics challenging (PA school hopeful) but manageable.

CSU gpa = 3.65
SAT = 1380
ACT = 30
Waiting for Oct 26 ACT scores.
Chances?

@HopefulSDSU:
SDSU admits by eligibility index and major. Intended major? Are you within the local service area for SDSU?

Your EI’s are (3.65 x800) + (1380)= 4300
Or (3.65 x 200) + (30 x10) = 1030

Average SAT EI last year was 4459 and ACT was 1064. You are within range but not a solid Match school.

Make sure you apply widely and best of luck.

Political Science, in state, out of SD area… applying other places but hopeful =)

@HopefulSDSU: You will be evaluated against all the Policitical Science major applicants so the EI threshold will be dependent upon how many spots are available and where your EI falls.

Last year, SDSU has 1688 Policitical Science Freshman applicants and accepted 612 which makes it a 36% acceptance rate.

Here are some stats from the Class of 2023 political science majors:

Accepted.
CSU GPA: 4.03

@HopefulSDSU: Sorry for the typo on Political Science. All you can do is apply and hope for the best.

@Gumbymom Hi! I have a question about my GPA Calculation. The CSU GPA in the site says my gpa is 3.69 but my 10-12 is 3.95. Does SDSU recalculate the gpa? Also, what is the acceptance rate for geological science major? Thank you for you all your help!

@Snoopdoggydogg: Where is the 3.95 GPA coming from, your HS transcript? If so, Many HS’s will give extra Honors points for non-UC approved Honors classes while the CSU website will only use UC approved Honors, AP, IB or DE courses from their approved list.

You can check your HS Honors approved courses by typing in the name of your HS:

https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist

You can double check your CSU Capped weighted GPA which equals the UC Capped weighted GPA using this calculator:

https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

For 2019, the Geological Sciences major had 78 applicants and accepted 28 so the acceptance rate was 36%.

@Gumbymom Ohhhh so the GPA that SDSU uses for admissions is capped at 8 semesters? Also, why is the acceptance rate so low for 78 applicants? Lastly do you think I am competitive getting in with a EI of 4462 non- local? Thank you for your help these are my last questions.

@Snoopdoggydogg: The overall acceptance rate for all majors at SDSU is around 34% and most majors are within +/- of 10% of the overall acceptance rate. The exception is Nursing which has around a 5% acceptance rate.

Since the average EI for 2019 was 4459, I would say that you are a Match for SDSU.

@Gumbymom Ahh i understand how it works now . Thank you for your help with this process it’s greatly appreciated!

My son has an EI of 1090 with ACT of 31. Is he likely to get accepted into engineering? Also when should we expect decisions to start rolling out?

@ejmacmc2020: Average ACT EI for 2019 was 1064 so a 1090 looks competitive.

SDSU releases some decisions in Mid-December for the Honors college invites but the majority will be released end of February/Early March.

@gumbymom

My daughter is applying to Weber Honors College so she is about to submit her Cal State application to SDSU. There is no option to select the Honors College on the Cal State App, so does it matter what major she picks?

She’ll complete the separate Weber Application later, of course. The Cal State one is due in just a few days.

Also, is it possible to get a csu gpa of 4.88? Or did I do it wrong? She got straight As except for one B in AP Chem. She also took 3 classes at community college which seemed to greatly increase her csu gpa since instructions said to count those college classes twice each, so she got 6 extra As from that.

Please advise. Thanks!

@Cdrp16: The capped weighted CSU/UC GPA is 4.4 maximum. You can use this calculator for the correct answer. The Cal states cap all AP/IB/DE or UC approved Honors classes at 8 semesters taken 10-11th grades.

Just plug in her grades for the 10-11th a-g courses. Add 1 extra honors point for any UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE classes taken 10-11th grades.

The Rogerhub calculator will give you the Unweighted UC GPA, Capped weighted UC GPA= Capped Weighted CSU GPA and the Fully weighted UC GPA.

The Cal states use the capped weighted only: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

I’m wondering if you know the acceptance rate for students declaring a major of Statistics? My son has just applied and felt he needed to declare a major, though I advised him to go in Undeclared as he’s truly not sure what he wants to study. He’s thinking Statistics, but last month was thinking Business. I’m hoping declaring a Statistics major has not hurt him. He’s got a 4.16GPA and 1480SAT, so I think that makes his EI 4808. Is that good for Statistics? I have a current SDSU student and his EI number was not that high and was an early admit and is in Weber’s Honors as well. I’m hopeful, but am clueless about Statistics as a major. Any advice?

@collegemom2bee: He looks very competitive for SDSU. Stats had around a 49% acceptance rate for 2019.
