SDSU Class of 2024 Application Thread

I can only afford a few thousand a year cause my income household is around 30,000. Shouldnt financial aid help?

@simmer3454: You are an OOS applicant and Cal states offer no financial aid other than any federal aid you are eligible so if your FASFA EFC is $0, then you will get the maximum Pell Grant of $6195, possibly some work study and you can take out $5500 in Federal loans as a Freshman. The rest will have to be funded by your parents through savings, loans, 529 account and current income.

OOS students are not eligible for Cal grants which are only for in-state CA applicants which makes the costs for in-state students very affordable.

Did you not run the Net Price calculator when you applied? It would have shown that as an OOS applicant, SDSU is not affordable based on family income.

Just plugging in some information as an example based on a $30K income, this is what I get that you will be required to pay.

Estimated total cost of attendance: $39,114.00
Estimated tuition and fees: $18,350.00 +
Estimated room and board charges
(Includes rooming accommodations and meals): $15,966.00 +
Estimated cost of books and supplies: $1,854.00 +
Estimated other expenses
(Personal expenses, transportation, etc.): $2,944.00
Estimated total grant aid
(Includes both merit and need based grant and scholarship aid from Federal, State, or Local Governments, or the Institution: ($6195)
Estimated Net Price After Grants and Scholarships: $32919.00

The $32919.00 can be reduced by taking out the $5500 federal student loan, your savings and the rest would be up to your parents with a parent plus loan or any college savings.

How much can you and your family contribute to your college education? SDSU looks unaffordable based on your post.

@simmer3454 Net price calculators are available on every college website, so you can check for each school you applied to.

Also, when you fill out the FAFSA, it gives you a number that is your estimated family contribution. This could help you determine how much you’ll need to close the gap.

@simmer3454,
SDSU is a public university funded by the State of California and its taxpayers.

Since the State is always hurting for money, and the intent of the state public universities is to educate taxpayers’ kids, they can’t afford to pay for the education of non state residents.

Students who apply from OOS, like Rhode Island, have to pay full fees for all 4 years. It’s about $42,000 a year and that’s not even the exact total. Federal aid (money) is a drop in the bucket. It won’t even begin to cover your full fees.

Our state publics do like to admit OOS students because you pay the bills for an instate resident student. Most students from Out of state don’t bother to ask the full price until AFTER they’ve been accepted and then they find out, oh, I can’t get financial aid for this?

You get the low Federal aid if you qualify, but you don’t get the state rates if your parents haven’t been paying thousands of dollars for years to California in taxes and living in California.

No, living in San Diego while going to school will not give you instate residency. It’s gonna cost you and your parents a lot of money.

Yes the calculator gave me good money off

@simmer3454: did you indicate you are an OOS student paying OOS tuition?

Not possible to have good money off if you did it correctly. Can you post the estimate you got?

Income $30K? How many in the family? How many in college?

You should be getting an FA package from SDSU soon, so you will know if it is affordable.

@simmer3454: I tried the calculator several ways and putting in OOS tuition, 5 in the family, 3 in college with a $30K income, I still get around $32,000 in costs per year to attend.

You are not a CA resident so your tuition alone is $19310 vs. $7510 for in-state students. Also you are required to live on-campus for 2 years so housing costs in the area of $17K/year.

Remember garbage in, garbage out. Not putting in the correct information will mislead you and us CC posters.

I’m curious why my daughter hasn’t heard one way or another. Your thoughts on why?

Her stats:
In state
4.1 CSU GPA
ACT of 33 (34 Superscore)
Undeclared major, although preference is Poli Sci and Business

EI of 1150 using the ACT

Already admitted to Barrett Honors at ASU (full tuition ride), Oregon Clark Honors, and Wisconsin. Deferred at Michigan.

Intends on applying to WHC.

Accepted! - on December 16
OOS
Pre-Environmental Sciences
received an email and portal update, as well as a Webers honors college invite
GPA 4.0
ACT 31

@sbdad12: SDSU only admits a few early high stat applicants in December and no rejections this early. The rest of the decisions will be posted late February through Early March.

Is it possible to switch undergraduate majors before hearing if accepted? Thank you

@homestretch99: Yes it is possible so the student needs to call admissions and inquiry as soon as possible.

@homestretch99 regarding changing majors: My daughter is currently a freshman, got into SDSU as Undeclared. She was able to change her major in November, no problem at all. She will begin her 2nd semester under her new major.

Does anyone know when the admission decisions for the honors college come out?

@pizza468

From the Weber’s Honor college page: **Applicants will be notified of their Weber Honors College admission decision in mid-April.

@pizza468 My son just submitted his WHC application in the last hour and after he submitted it, the message he received was “You will be notified of our admission decision in late February.” When my older son was accepted two years ago I think we heard in Feb since there was an Honor’s College Reception/Orientation type event in mid-March at SDSU.

@CSUdream my son applied undeclared for fall 2020 he has 4.05 csu gpa and 1250 sat EI 4490 is that close to what child had last year and got in for undeclared?

@portillo2001 Yes! My daughter’s EI was 4368. Your son looks good! However, remember that every year the applicants are ranked by major, and it all depends on the kids he is being ranked against. Some years stats are higher, some years lower. That said, I think your son has a great chance of getting in! Good luck to him! (She heard from SDSU the first week of March last year.)

Just an update on admission if you didn’t hear before Christmas. My son had a mix up with ACT score id and corrected it. He was just accepted today so I guess some don’t have to wait until March to find out. Good Luck everyone!

@ejmacmc2020: Based on your son’s stats as an OOS applicant and if there was not a mixup with his ACT, he would have heard in December with the rest of the higher stat OOS applicants. Congratulations to him…
