SDSU vs 32k

Ok…heres my buddys dillema. He was accepted to SDSU and he loves it there but his parents dont want him to leave just yet. He can have 32,000 dollars(dont ask) if he stays for the next two years. He will go to a community college and transfer to a better school (UCSD, UCD) later. The problem is that he cant stand community college and the atmosphere of staying here especially for two more years. Plus, he was very excited about going until he just got his dream shot down…I know what i would do, but do you guys have any suggestions for him. Thanks

parents are probably worried too much about sdsu’s reputation as a party school…

i’m guessing he’s an only child…or the only child going to colllege. $32,000 isn’t that much to the parent’s since it would mean keeping their son away from a potentially harmful environment because of all the hot girls and partying.

this is too dificult a problem…

on one hand, it is extremely important that he attend college at an atmosphere in which he will enjoy life and hopefully prosper academically. on the other hand there is risk the the atmosphere will be to enjoyable and he will not do well academically.

at a community college he will have his $32,000, his parent’s will be able to monitor his life for the next two years, his parent’s will be more comfortable/happy in their situation…
however, it sounds as if chances for him doing well in school are not too good unless he’s an extremely motivated individual because…he won’t be happy at CC.

i would definately talk to your friend and let him realize that no matter where he goes…he has to to be prepared to study and not let outside frivolous influences affect the rest of his independant life.

if he goes to sdsu…great, party hard and study hard. and make sure he maintains good contact with his parents so they won’t be worrying 24/7 about what their son is doing.

if he goes to CC, tell him to spend the 32k wisely, don’t let the atmosphere bring down his school work, and tell him to give his parents reason to trust him when he transfers off to ucd or ucsd. because there is clearly a trust problem with his parents.

also, do be warned about the graduation rates at SDSU which is ~9%-15 in four years (approximation though PR says it’s 9. Currently no CSU has a graduation in 4 years rate higher than 15%). There is speculation that these percentages have increased, but there is no documented data of this yet.
