Sean Penn

Disgusting.

Fantastic actor.

I was hoping Mickey Rourke would win because he needs it more.

YAY…
i loved Milk…it was breath taking!

I don’t like Mickey Rourke but Sean Pean is a great actor.

he’s a powerful actor and he also made a strong call to action. respect him for using his position for good

I thought he was great.

I thought he was great as well. I have not seen the movie but plan to now.

I think he’s an amazing actor, but tonight he forgot to thank his wife. Tsk tsk!

(and Mickey Rourke creeps me out, so I’m glad he didn’t win)

What was disgusting about Sean Penn winning?

(And what is this doing here, instead of the Parent Cafe?)

^^wondering the same thing

OP - care to elaborate?

I think it was less the win than the acceptance speech, where he spoke in favor of gay rights.

Omigod, teh ghey! I could get gay just by watching Sean Penn play the role of a gay man! Plus if two women fall in love and get married, that could break up my straight marriage!

I’m not really a Sean Penn fan but he was fantastic in Milk. Watching the film, you totally forgot it was Penn. He was truly amazing and absolutely deserved to win the Oscar.

I really like Sean Penn- he can be over the top sometimes- but he is a very powerful actor and he walks his talk.

good director as well.

Speaking about gay rights, when you are nominated for a role playing a politician who was assassinated because they were gay- seems to be relevant.

Sean Penn was great in the role. I liked DeNero’s comment that he must be a great actor because he managed to play straight guys in all those previous movies. Mickey Rourke was great too but he was, by his own admission, playing himself. I hope Rourke gets some more roles as a result of the nomination that give him a shot at showing what he’s got in some different roles.

He did an excellent job in the movie, and I applaud his speaking in favor of gay rights. The LGBTQ community deserves the same human rights that straights have. I’m straight, but not narrow.

Love that!!

I saw MILK with my kids and I thought the film was excellent and that Sean Penn’s portrayal was terrific and so I think he deserved this award.

As far as speaking of gay rights in his acceptance speech…I felt it was entirely appropriate…For one thing, a “public person” has an opportunity for a public platform. Moreover, the film was about a politician who worked toward gay rights and who was murdered for being gay. The film was based on a true story and has elements of being a documentary of sorts. So, it is appropriate in an acceptance speech to talk about the topic of this true story and relate it to events today and to bring awareness. LA is in CA and this is a big issue there. Harvey Milk was a CA politician as well. I feel his speech related to the film and much of the message in it. I think it would be different if he was in a film or played a character that had nothing to do with gay rights and then used the Oscars as a chance to champion gay rights.

I am disheartened to read someone refer to him/this as “disgusting.” I’m finding the remark to be disgusting itself, to be quite honest. But all opinions are welcome.
