Good. The news article suggested that her visual identification of him could be challenged. Kinda doesn’t matter, if there’s DNA.
Update: Jesse Matthew found guilty yesterday on all 3 counts in his trial for the 2005 Fairfax assault/attempted murder/abduction after an interesting turn of events. After the prosecution rested its case, and the Judge denied motions by the Defense to throw out the case, Matthew changed his plea to guilty via an Alford plea. Alford pleas allow the defendant to not admit guilt, just concede that there is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to convict. Judge accepted it. There was no plea deal made with prosecution with regards to anything. Judge will sentence in October. Matthew faces up to Life in prison for each of the counts. There is no parole in Va. Must register as a sex offender.
Here’s a couple of news reports:
Next up for him is his trial for Hannah Graham. I believe the next court date for that case is still 6/25.
Another murder charge for Jesse Matthew - 20 year old Morgan Harrington killed in 2009.
I hope this will eventually bring some closure for the Harrington family.
Wow. If he is guilty, I’m so glad she was stopped. So scary.
I am glad he will be in prison for the rest of his life. A serial killer near a campus is terrifying.
Jesse Matthew to plead guilty:
Hopefully now he will find out what it’s like to be raped.
^^^Seriously?
Awful thing to say, Emily. There’s no question that he is a malevolent predator but let’s not degrade ourselves by promoting equally medieval horrors.
One of the saddest aspects of these cases are how many missed opportunities there were to stop this from happening if just one person had intervened. I feel so terribly sad for the families.
Sabaray, that’s very true. How did investigators miss this guy, particularly given his dismissal from college because of some incident or altercation involving women? He deserved the presumption of innocence like anyone else but were there other things that should have gotten additional scrutiny?
What is most disturbing to me are the actions, or lack thereof, on the part of bystanders or witnesses the night Hannah was killed. From what’s been mentioned in court documents, it was obvious she was in no condition to be making decisions - yet two women failed to intervene as Matthew moved in, other than to comment " you don’t even know her" and “he’s gonna f*** her up”? A witness saw them at the car but continued on? What would you do? My conscience would be killing me.
That is frightening; people are so reluctant to get involved in such situations. I am no hero but I think I would have just lingered around to demonstrate to Matthew that there were witnesses, hopefully which would have encouraged him to move on. Someone should have called a taxi for this girl a…or called the police while she was still in the bar (and woozy). We all know that the cops cannot keep an eye on every inebriated college student in a town like Charlottesville, but maybe the police should make a habit of cruising near high profile “college” bars late at night. Cameras are not enough!
