Searching for art

CC seems to have the answers for everything - there’s an amazing wealth of knowledge here so I thought I’d throw out my question and see if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I’m search for a piece of art by a specific artist, her name was Deb Davis. She passed away in 2010. I’ve googled but come up with nothing. She was not a well known artist, though I understand her brother, Noel Rockmore, was more well known.

A friend of mine recently purchased a house that belonged to the artist and would love to find a small piece of the artist’s work to return to the house. I thought it would make a lovely house warming present. Is there an easy way to find pieces by an artist? Any ideas? I’ve posted on craigslist in the community the woman lived in. I’m debating whether or not to post on craigslist in NY as I understand years ago the woman won a prize for one of her paintings in NY (but I don’t have any more details beyond that she’d won a prize). But that seems like a long shot and I’m also afraid of getting my mailbox filled with spam, etc.

I’ve also been checking on ebay, currently there are pieces by her brother available. (I wish ebay had a “wanted” section).

I’ve touched base with someone who has a website that is devoted to Noel Rockmore’s work. & they sent me some photos of the Deb Davis’ work (its really lovely and made me want to find some even more) but they didn’t 'know of any that was available or where I could find any. All they had were photos.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

is this who you are referring to? (just wondered)

Another tip–since the artist you are searching for is deceased, if you know where she lived when she passed away…you might make inquiries as to what gallery handled her estate. Since it was as early as 2010, a gallery may not be assigned yet.

Hey oaklndmom-
That upcoming Rockmore show is not too horribly far from me (hour and a half maybe) and my DS’s gf is getting transferred back to your neck of the woods. Maybe we can trade favors :)

Many artists either teach classes, or still take classes, at local art schools. Maybe look around for a school that she was affiliated with?

I’m not talking colleges or universities, just local studios.

thanks everyone! I’ve been in touch with The Noel Rockmore Project - so far, none of Deb Davis’ works have come up for sale. they were nice enough to send me a link to an ebay auction of one of Noel Rockmore’s works that is of Deb Davis’ cat, but it looks like the ebay bidding is going above what I’d like to spend unless its for a work by Deb Davis(though I’ve called my friend to let her know about the auction).

musica, that deborah davis is a different deborah davis. Though I might contact that artist and see if she ever comes across works by the deb davis I’m looking for.

eightythree, thats a great idea to look for a school she might have been affiliated with. I’ll add it to my list of things to research.

I’ll be checking with galleries in the neighborhood she lived in as well.

I do know that Deb Davis became discouraged and didn’t paint much after she did a few commissions and the purchasers didn’t like the work.

JYM, thanks for the offer too! & if there’s ever a time I can be of help to your DS’s gf, just sent me a pm.

Thanks, oaklandmom. Will do.
